We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Kosloske and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started Convenient Colorado Counseling I was working for a government agency providing vocational counseling to people with disabilities. I enjoyed being a vocational counselor but due to my high caseload size my time with each individual was limited. I found myself feeling like I was just scratching the surface with many of my clients on what they were truly needing support with.
So, I started Convenient Colorado Counseling out of my desire to have the freedom to help others in a person-centered, creative, and innovative way.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Convenient Colorado Counseling apart from the others? I specialize in suicide and self-harm prevention, which is a huge need in Colorado. There are not many therapists that specialize in this much needed area. It is my goal to build Convenient Colorado Counseling to be the #1 suicide and self-harm resource, advocate, and counseling service in Colorado.
What am I most excited about?
I love the work that I do. What excites me the most is when I can see the light in my clients’ eyes each time they make progress towards their goals. It is an honor to support people when they are at their lowest point questioning whether they want to live another day and help them build a life they are excited to live.
How did I get where I am today business-wise? Was it easy? If not, how did I overcome the challenges?
I started Convenient Colorado Counseling 2 years ago in May. I have gotten to where I am today with the emotional support of my family, friends, and my own counselor. Professionally I have been supported by clinical supervisors and a wonderful business coach. Working through the challenges of being a business-owner (especially during the peak of COVID) has not been easy but drawing on the support from others has been crucial to my success.
What are the lessons I have learned along the way?
I have learned that a strong support system is key to having a strong business. A large part of having a strong support system is making time to invest in friendships, healthy family communication, and business connections. Also, it is important to have an abundance mindset in business.
What do I want the world to know about my brand or story?
I am so passionate about working with suicide and self-harm prevention because it is a part of my personal story. About 7 years ago I tried to take my own life. A counselor supported me through that dark time and supported me in building the life I have today. It is my calling to do the same for others. I support people in building the life they are excited to live.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area for a week this is what the itinerary would look like:
Day 1: We would go to Hurts Donuts for breakfast then for a hike at Cheyanne Canyon. We would bring hammocks and have a picnic while enjoying the mountain views. Afterwards we would go to Peaks N Pines brewery for beers and pizza.
Day2: We would head to Canyon City to ride the train and visit the Royal Gorge.
Day 3: We would head to Lake Pueblo to go swimming, hike, and ride bikes around the state park.
Day 4: We would go to Manitou Springs/Cripple Creek to look at all the little shops and restaurants.
Day 5-7: We would go to Granby area to camp, kayak, paddleboard, and whitewater raft.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my amazing business coach Tony Johnson for mentoring and supporting me while I grow my business.
