We had the good fortune of connecting with ANDRÉS LHIMA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi ANDRÉS, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My context has been very important to me, I come from a context very close to popular culture in Mexico, I grew up in popular neighborhoods, often considered slums but with a wide wealth of Mexican culture and customs that continue to accompany me. I studied industrial design at the best school in Mexico, UNAM, and learning about the work of designers like the Campana brothers inspired me and motivated me to analyze and investigate more of my culture and translate it into everyday objects.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am proud of my context, I use it to create my designs, at first some people I lived with doubted that the design style I wanted to do would be something that would be liked not only in Mexico but in the world, but I have been persistent, I have I learned that I must improve, and little by little I began to have unparalleled opportunities such as selling in the MoMA NY store, MoMA Tokyo, having my designs produced by Kikkerland and distributed worldwide. I am also proud to have exhibited my work in the United States, France, Austria, China, Italy, and Mexico. It is still a challenge that companies trust in producing my designs but I know that little by little they will do it, because they are projects that are made with research, analysis and especially with the heart, and those are the products that I think will be connect with anyone in the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am from Mexico City and I love my city, I would recommend that you walk through central neighborhoods full of history and architecture, the center is very beautiful but if you go out a bit you find a lot of magic, for example I love the area of La Merced, something The classic thing is to walk along avenues like Reforma or Insurgentes, I would also recommend visiting Ciudad Universitaria to the south of Mexico City, and obviously eating some good tacos in a street stall.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is a group of people in Uruapan Michoacan led by the Mexican artist Javier Marin, they take charge of the Fabrica de San Pedro Cultural Center, it is a large group of people, from the people who run the cafeteria, to the person who manages the artist’s foundation of the same name. Within this group of people is Matías Álvarez, a photographer and plastic artist who is concerned and committed to making this avocado town rich not only economically but also culturally. He and his partner Lili seek to document what happens in the Factory. of San Pedro and being able to share it with tourists and locals, in addition to generating artistic workshops for the young generations.
