We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Forino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
One of the most important factors behind any successful business in my opinion is networking and good communication. At least in my business, it’s basically all referral based. Putting yourself out there and making a good impression is essential in gaining new clients. I also never try to leave an email, text or call hanging for too long. Prompt response time means a lot to people. If you set up expectations for a client, you should always strive to meet those or even exceed them. Going above and beyond, even in the slightest way, goes a long way.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an architectural photographer in Denver, Colorado. I studied photography at Savannah College of Art and Design where I first found my love for photographing architecture. After living back home in New Jersey for a year after school, I decided to pick up everything and move to Colorado. Not knowing anyone or even having a job lined up, it was definitely one of the most risky things I’ve done in my life, but fortunately it worked out really well. One of the big reasons why I am where I am today professionally is from connections. As a self-employed photographer, making those connections with people is really a key factor in getting work. There is no steady paycheck so you have to put yourself out there and work hard for it. Nothing is ever easy, but it definitely is easier doing what I love every single day. What I’ve learned over the years is to be confident and take pride in my work.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First and foremost, we would go to Illegal Petes, because that’s the best place in Denver. I would definitely bring them to a handful of my favorite breweries (Denver Beer Co., Station 26, Odell). Cheba Hut is another place I typically take people from out of state. Golden is a town that I bring people to the most. I think it’s such a beautiful place with so many things to do. If they want to see a killer scenic view, I would take them up to Flagstaff mountain in Boulder, where there is a lookout point. It’s one of my favorite spots to go in Colorado. Lastly, if we had time, I always try to bring people up to the Frisco area and go kayaking in the Dillon Reservoir.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My first mentor, Sameer, taught me the ins and outs of running your own photography business and how to treat a client. Most of my close friends from high school, who I went to college with as well, are all in the art & design world. Being surrounded by creative people really motivated me and still do to this day. A shoutout also deserves to go to Justin Chan, who recommended me for this. He’s a great friend and also one of the most talented photographers I know! And of course, without my wife Jordan, parents and family, I wouldn’t be where I am today without their love and support.
