We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Glowczewski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thoughts leading up to my decision to start a sole proprietorship were spawned from my experience in the graphic design field, post-graduation. I had a few jobs working for Mom & Pop shops and realized I could only go as far as they were willing to let me go. How far they were willing to let me succeed and advance in life would never exceed their own as long as I worked under them. I needed to not work under them, while not offending them, in order to see success, I know I can achieve more if I could give clientele my most raw expression. I want to draw for a living – it isn’t easy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Professionally speaking, I’m here answering this question right now, I believe, because my bubble burst. I’ve burned to the candle at both ends for 20 years now, 15 of them professionally, 10 of them artistically. Living in two worlds for that amount of time has probably shortened my lifespan and the art has become more eager because of it. Regardless of subject-matter, there’s a visual-evolution of it that can be followed on my website. I’ve overcome so many chapters just by simply living through them, regardless how crazy south Florida is, and the lifestyles found here. The South Florida Beach Life*
I like to think I am my brand. I set out to be as honest as possible to anyone and everyone that comes across my work. I hope that can be verified for better or for worse. It’s difficult trying to relate to everyone when the content I push is art-inspiration and physical-activity-motivation. The concepts are vast and open-to-all and socially, we like to pigeon-hold people into thematic nuggets. in order to sell. The journey I found myself in is one where I have to learn to except everyone or else find myself in an echo-chamber alone. It’s a lot of work on top of a lot of work.
I’d like to be remembered as the baby that smiled before the average baby develops those muscles. Thats the happiest I’ve ever been told I am. Thats the only way I can explain my happiness and innate positivity that I want to honestly share through my work. I smile in photos, and I draw a smiling Batman as often as possible.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Man, South Florida is a destination spot. Too often I’ve brought the right person to the wrong place or vice versa. Living by the coast means everything’s expensive and all people want to do is spend their money here while I’ve done nothing but pay off student-loan debt and survive. In my early twenties I survived off a can of peanuts a week for six months because I couldn’t afford to eat after paying bills. I am definitely not the guy to ask what’s fun around town – I have fun for cheap! And almost no one thinks cheap is fun LOL.
That being said, I could only take people to the little corners of local restaurants, bars with live music, and wherever dancing happens. Work, Draw, Party, maybe Sleep. Personally, nothings better than drawing at the beach surrounded by beautiful women. I wish everyone could feel that. I always go home happy no matter what I drew – and those are some of the best drawings of my life. That’d be the pursuit – it’s a lofty one!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m probably bias enough to give more thanks to those who are closer to me than others. Family, friends, enemies and strangers are all observed, and I’m surprised what I can learn from those around me. I continue to learn.
Family, they support me by doubting me and leaving me to fend for myself. Friends were always interested in other things rather than art. Enemies knew where I was vulnerable. Strangers keep to themselves. It’s the stranger-artists that’d I’d give the most credit to; doubting me, ignoring me, and attacking me sure stoke the flame but the time spent observing other artists as I came across them throughout my life always fed me the most.
The kids who stole my art to claim it as their own, the other artists who worked in other mediums, and the colleagues and co-workers I shared rooms with deserve most of the credit when it comes to feeding me artistically and positively.
