We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Das and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Honestly? I think we are living in a time when women and families want more from their healthcare experience. We want personalized, individual care for ourselves and our babies and less of the standardized fit-in-the-box-care we’ve come to expect. I wanted my business to fit that; gone is the need to drag all your kids to get lactation support, I’ll come to you while your toddler naps in the comfort of your home.
Working in the space of new parenthood, when families are so raw and tired is sacred work. To enter in is an honor and it’s not some large facility they’re seeking help from; it’s a mom who’s gone before them. We used to live in societies where we saw our sisters and aunts and friends navigate the fourth trimester and breastfeeding and we were able to learn from them. But in our current societal set up, we’re so isolated and everyone has to figure it out on their own. Whether they’ve connected with me on social media or through our local professional network most of my clients feel like they know me before I even get to their door. I really focus on remaining true to who I am in my social and professional presence and I think that’s refreshing to a lot of people and a substantial part of why my business is thriving.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a Certified Lactation Counselor and a Certified New Parent Educator. As the owner of Motherhood Untamed Lactation, I wear a lot of hats in our local community! I see clients privately, I work alongside the local birth center hosting a free breastfeeding/motherhood support group, I teach at our local hospital and the birth center both prenatal breastfeeding and baby care classes and I am a leader in our local La Leche League. When I started thinking about creating this business, I envisioned having the ability to sit on someone’s couch with them and help them with their infant feeding goals, but I also wanted to ensure that everyone had the education and access to care they needed. I didn’t want it to feel intimidating, or like I knew best; I want my clients to feel like their older sister or bestie is there to support them in their goals for their baby and their family. It took me years of dreaming this career up, and a global pandemic to get me to go “okay, I get one life and I’m going to give this a whirl!” to get here. I’ve had to become better at setting boundaries, which in turn just makes me a better practitioner for my clients; I’ve had to figure out a dance of working in a time sensitive space as well as being a connected and checked in mama to my beautiful circus at home. It’s not perfect, but I never intended perfection. Making an impact one family at a time is what sets my soul on fire and I can’t wait to see how the future of my business pans out.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh, Fort Collins how I love you 😍 A beautiful hike around Horsetooth followed by a Margarita on the patio at the Rio on a warm summer day. I adore old town square and how it always feels like you’re on vacation. My kids and I frequent the Discovery Museum and any of the many splash pads we have around. Live music at the breweries and food truck rallies in City Park, what’s not to love!?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many! We are so fortunate here in Northern Colorado to have a wonderful professional village centered around birth and postpartum. Montana @ Glenn Family Wellness and Rachel @ Baby by Blunk have been my main champions when my business was just a dream. And they continue to be amazing cheerleaders now that the dream has come to fruition. I would also be remiss not to thank Althea and her midwives at Tender Gifts Birth center who have been amazing supporters of my business and have been a huge help in championing my lactation career to the next step.
