We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Delahoussaye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Those who’ve never run a full-scale photography business probably don’t know how little time we actually spend taking photos. We’ve heard time and time again that people don’t understand why photography costs so much if it’s “just” 8 hours on a wedding day or “just” 45 minutes at a family photo shoot. The service of photography does include the photo shoot experience and the final photo product, but what outsiders don’t see is the countless hours of answering emails; scheduling meetings with clients and other vendors and contractors; managing finances; updating websites, CREATING websites and landing pages; writing blog posts to drive traffic to the website; creating, planning, strategizing content for social media; engaging on social media including interacting with hashtags and replying to comments and DMs; and so much more. Not to mention all the costs involved with maintaining a professional photography business such as having current equipment, business insurance, law costs for contracts and policies, domain and website hosting, and so much more. For every wedding day, you can add at least 50 additional hours of a mix of things to the actual day of photography. For every portrait session, add at least 25 hours. Who knows how many additional hours would go into brand and commercial photography or anything else!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At the center of our business, we exist to capture legacies of love — to freeze moments in time so that people can look back years from now and be instantly taken back and relive it in all it’s beauty and joy. Our heart is to encourage people to embrace who they are and what they look like in this moment and celebrate their accomplishments, relationships and experiences now. Don’t wait — if you wait till you’re satisfied with whatever it is you feel is lacking, you’ll miss so many opportunities and moments, and you’ll regret it later. Trust us. We’ve heard it countless times from our clients.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would recommend an itinerary that celebrates everything the central coast and Bay Area of California has to offer. A huge part of that would be wine tasting and restaurant hopping! We particularly love the experience (and the views) at Mountain Winery in historic Saratoga, CA — the photos will be show stopping. After that, you have have to visit the Garlic Capital of the World, Gilroy, and try some garlic ice cream or go shopping at the outlets. Then we would send you to the coast — visit the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and The Mystery Spot. Maybe go whale watching in the Monterey Bay or kayaking in the Elkhorn Slough. Definitely have to check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and then you could end your trip in Carmel-by-the-Sea where you can shop at the luxury stores, go wine tasting and have some of the best food!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The best influences in my life and my career truly have come from my loved ones and all of my clients. That collection of people are the ones who have believed in me, respected the value I’ve set for myself and challenged me to push myself even harder and farther than I could have ever imagined on my own. And… Taylor Swift. That woman inspires me as an artist, a creative, a business person, a feminist, a leader, a paradigm shifter, and beyond.
