Meet Angelica Martinez | Crochet florist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelica Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelica, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
When asked the question “Why did you pursue this career” my younger self comes to mind.
When I was about 10 years old my grandma taught me the basics of crocheting and from there I fell in love with crocheting as a hobby.
I had no idea crocheted flowers were a thing until I saw a post with some beautiful flowers on Instagram, after seeing those flowers I knew I wanted to make some of my own, at first it was only for fun I had no intention of selling them, even though I was gaining more customers and followers I knew I just wasn’t ready to commit full time.
Eventually, I got a draining restaurant job to make some money in my spare time but after a few months I quit this job just as I had quit my previous restaurant job not because I didn’t like working but because the work I was doing just was not for me. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset and knew since I was little I wanted to be my own boss.
When I was 12 years old I created my first cosmetic line selling lip gloss and lip scrubs and then did this again when I was 13 but unfortunately, I didn’t have the education on business like I do now, so both businesses didn’t last long. After I quit my job I knew I was going to fully commit to being a florist, I got my certifications with the help of my parents because of my age I was not able to obtain them on my own, from there I continued to build up my business little by little.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When developing my crocheted flower business I knew my business was very different from traditional florist businesses for one my flowers are meant to last forever unlike live flowers that eventually wilt and die which isn’t a good representation of the love you have for the person receiving them.
My flowers are meant to represent a long-lasting love, the perfect gift for the person giving or receiving them.
A business isn’t built overnight it’s built every day you show up and I live by that.
Marketing has been the hardest part for me, posting constantly, coming up with new content, figuring out the algorithm of each social media app, etc has been a challenge but I enjoy it, it teaches me a lot about what does and doesn’t work, which is crucial for any business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I were to plan a week-long trip for a friend or family member traveling from out of town I would take them to some of the best local food places first.
Personally, after I’ve traveled I’m always starving, those gas station snacks on the way to my destination just don’t cut it.
Some of those places include
El M7 Mariscos y Mas
Los jibertos
Mountain Berry Bowls Grand Junction.
After we’ve eaten we would spend the next few days exploring the beautiful nature all around, for example, we would do some hiking, fishing, and camping. Those are just a few of the many outdoor activities Grand Junction has to offer.
Once we are ready to settle down from the outdoor fun we would walk around downtown and visit some of the local small shops maybe get some ice cream or go thrifting.
On the last day of their visit we would float the Colorado river and end the day with some more amazing local food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe all credit and recognition to God.
I wholeheartedly believe that God has blessed me with the wisdom, determination, and vision to create such beautiful works of art.
There are not enough words in any language to describe how blessed I’am in every aspect of my life.
