We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Zarlengo-Reyther and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Since high school, my favorite quote has always been, “take a chance while you’ve still got the choice”. These are the words of Bon Scott from AC/DC. When opportunity knocks, we are faced with the decision to go for it, or to go in another direction. Sometimes a chance may come again, but in another form and maybe not one that is a s suitable as the one that has passed. I don’t always live by that quote, and there are many times that I wished I had seized upon an opportunity upon presenting itself. These days, I do tend to reflect more on Bon’s words and realize that once the choice is gone, it may actually not arise again, even in different forms.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the founder and one of the guitarists in a heavy metal band called Immortal Sÿnn. It began as a project in high school, and was always intended to be a career choice, never a hobby, and I still view it as my main career.

For me personally, what I believe sets us apart from others is that fact that we are not in the business all for ourselves. This was a struggle in the early days, as the scene was extremely cutthroat. If other artists didn’t view you as a means to help them succeed, then they wouldn’t care less about you. To a lot of artists back in those days, just asking a simple question such as “who helped you to book this show?” was, to them, akin to literally taking food out of their child’s mouth. I entered the business with the philosophy that any artist I liked, I would help promote to the best of my abilities to get their music out there, as well as my own, because other people deserved to get the same satisfaction out of something I enjoyed so much. I always wanted to see others succeed. This was always a point of contention with other groups of which i was a part in the past, as they too had the same backward mentality of, “quit helping other people, only we matter”. While a lot of that mentality seems to have gone away, at least for the most part in the local metal scene, I can still sees shadows of it lingering.

Getting to where we are today was not easy. It took innumerable hours of dedication, work, and networking. However, I always stood my ground and was unwilling to follow trends just for the sake of popularity. I always had a vision in mind, and am just now being able to really realize it with our growing support. Just like in any other relationship or business, to truly realize your potential, you have to see what no longer serves you and let it go. This is not always easy, especially if those working for you don’t necessarily agree, but you have to follow the path that you know will truly reveal your dreams.

Immortal Sÿnn is a heavy metal band that plays traditional-style metal with a bit of old school thrash thrown in for good measure. We are not interested in playing modern styles, nor looking like we just came in off the street à la most local bands. We are here to take a chance while we’ve still got the choice.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Denver and its suburbs have some of the best places for food in the country. However, I like to keep it simple and familiar. I may go to McCoy’s on I-70 and Federal, Great Scott’s up in Adams County, or to the always awesome Cherry Cricket. For drinks, I have an affinity for bars in North Denver such as Rocky Top Tavern, Local 46, Beer Depot, and The Berkeley Inn. I also frequent some of the DU bars such as The Pioneer and Crimson & Gold. One of my favorite things to do in my free time is drive around the city, especially to the so-called “haunted” spots. The itinerary would include Riverside Cemetery, Riverdale Rd., and the old Westminster University. I also like the more villatic locations the city has to offer, so cruising some of the backroads through Parker or Arvada might be an option, but let’s not forget the great Daniel’s Park near Highland’s Ranch!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate it to my best friend, Mary, who passed last year. She always believed in me and encouraged me to always take myself to the next level. Her memory will always serve as an inspiration for me to follow my dreams and face new challenges.
