We had the good fortune of connecting with April Stites and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue a creative career because being creative is something that brings me joy in life. I can’t imagine putting in hours of work on something I don’t enjoy doing. This niche came early on when I was very young. From sculpting things out of “sculpy” clay to drawing my aunt’s dogs at 6 years old. I dedicated a lot of my time growing up doing crafts and other artsy things. Which then turned to my college years, where I decided to go to an art and design school. I graduated from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and have not strayed from interior design since. Almost 3 years ago I started my company A Lue Designs which has been such an unexplainably rewarding adventure and leap of faith!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I could put something really cheesy here, but I’ll get to the point. My interior design company A Lue Designs strives to be different down to the very small touches in our designs. As the owner of A Lue Designs, I pride myself on being a little different. I like to think outside of the box with materials, finishes and furniture selections. I enjoy doing things like two toned wallpaper, funky side pieces of furniture and moody aesthetics. While I do love to stay on trend. I am overjoyed by the hugs and smiles I receive from my clients, because this is not “my vision”, this is their vision. I am simply here to make things easier for them and really bring their entire vision together.

We all make mistakes when we’re learning how to take on something new. I read a great book that had said, Henry Ford failed hundreds of times before completing the V8 engine. I learned that being a business owner takes,
1. a lot of guts
2. a lot of research
3. a lot of time(be patient)

However, my job is so unbelievably rewarding. I wouldn’t change it for the world!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I do love the city, but to be honest… I don’t spend much time there! You can usually find me outdoors in the mountains or enjoying some local bites to eat. Some of my recent favorites are Bodega, Aspen Lodge & Vesta Lounge. I enjoy craft beer as well. New Terrain is just a nice outdoorsy spot & you can take your dog!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My business name stands for a few things. A- stands for April, which is me. I am the mastermind behind this entire company. Lue- stands for Luedtke, my mothers maiden name. Family is very important to me and I grew up with mainly women in my family. These women all worked very hard and were very successful. That inspired me to build the company. Designs- stands for interior design. Something that has kept me creative and on my toes for about 8 years now! My shout out goes to my family. My biggest cheerleaders!
