We had the good fortune of connecting with Arly Landry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arly, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
There weren’t any bags on the market that matched the aesthetics of Chris’s curvy retro-style frames. We wanted to create entire bikepacking setups that harken to the golden age of hand-built bicycles (think 19th century French Randonneuring). We also felt that bike bags in general lacked the customization and personality that custom frame building offers. We wanted to create instagram worthy rides, that were also extremely capable. We had a hunch that other cyclists would also want to have more personal and artistic rides.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Goodday bike works is the collaborative studio of Goodday Cycles and Curiosity Bike Bags. We make custom, artistic and capable adventure frames made start to finish from airplane grade steel and powder coated in house. Our bike bags complement your bicycle by providing necessary storage for long-distance bike travel without compromising how your bike rides with a fully loaded kit or how it looks. We’re really proud of the personalized experience we provide to our customers and the beautiful one-off creations we come up with as a result. For example we made a bike inspired by David Bowie’s ‘Ziggy Stardust’ album. We called it ‘Life on Mars?’ and it’s a sparkly orange gravel bike complete with bowie’s signature lighting bolts and martian motifs on the frame and bar bags. We’re also really proud that we make our frames and bags in house with our own 2 hands. Our relationship with our customers is more like that of an artist and patron, where you are getting a one-of-a-kind piece of bike art that you commission AND you help create.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Gunnison is 2 hours from any interstate and is surrounded on all sides by public lands which makes it such a perfect place for bike travel. Grab some breakfast burritos and coffee from Tributary then bike from town to the flow/slick-rock trails at Hartman rocks. Apres bike with Nepalese food at Sherpa Cafe and then grab a drink at Blackstock Bistro.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
‘Hunch: Turn Your Everyday Insights into the Next Big Thing’ by Bernadette Jiwa was a book that we found inspirational in taking the first steps to incorporate our business. Jiwa talks about approaching entrepreneurship with the idea you can’t fail because even if things don’t work out, you’ve brought something into the world that you wanted to see exist that didn’t before.
