Meet Asia Washington | CEO/Cake Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Asia Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Asia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was 3 things:
1. Defining my own Value.
2. Freedom of time.
3. Financial Independence

I have had many corporate jobs and after awhile, I was SO FED UP with “them” making me feel “replaceable” instead of a valued employee, telling me how much they were going to pay me, when I needed to be there, and when I could and couldn’t take vacations, sick days, etc.

At the time, I was working for Comcast customer service and was only getting paid $500 per week. It was hard to make ends meet! I also was going through a very hard time with the loss of my father and they only wanted to grant me 3 days grievance time. I was told that if I needed longer than that, I would have to seek counseling to save my job.

I have HAD IT with others being “in control” of my destiny! I knew God have given the the talent, love, and passion for cakes so, I decided that I was going to trust in God and take a leap of faith, quit my job, and go all in!

Yes!-There were and still are obstacles! No!-Nothing came easy! Yes!- There was no guaranteed paycheck every week. No!-I was not aware of working more than 40 hours a week BUT I wouldn’t trade it for another job!!

I love being in control of my time and my finances. It also opened up a door for me to work on self-love and self-improvement, which overall, allowed me to show up and pour more into my business.

Running a business is HARD but it is SO WORTH THE WORK! 😊

At Sweet Savour Cakery, we specialize in creating delicious, one-of-a-kind custom luxury wedding and celebration cakes. We pride ourselves in our ability to produce custom flavors and trendy designs to match our clients needs. We recognize the fact that everyone is unique and prefer different flavor profiles and we love that we can cater to them all!-Even the health-conscious community!

Sweet Savour Cakery is all about spreading joy to everyone we have an encounter with. We know how rough life is and we choose to sweeten it up, one cake at a time!

Cakes are more than a dessert!-They’re a gift that you can eat! Cakes bring people together, form bonds, and creates lasting memories within family, friends, and communities.

I’m most proud of the resilience I’ve built while running a business. As a self-taught cake artist and first generation business owner, I’ve had to learn everything on my own.
I’ve sought help through free mentors via Colorado’s Small Business Administration, paying for cake courses, joining organizations and participating in their business bootcamps, hiring a business coach, and a lot of YouTube University. 😀

It wasn’t easy by any means but I took it one baby-step at a time! Any obstacles that came in my path, I always prayed about it and sought knowledge from other business owners or available local resources and Googled almost everything!

I want the world to know that you can do anything that you put your mind to. If it is in God’s will for you, it will not pass you by! 😉

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting my city,
I would first take her to eat at one of my favorite breakfast spots-Moonlight diner.
Then we would do one of my favorite activities, like hiking in the mountains, Top golf, Pindustry, or Watch a movie at the Southlands luxury theater.
We would get lunch at Bubbas 33 and enjoy a nice massage at Denver Deep.
We would end with dinner at El Jardin with dessert by Sweet Savour Cakery and enjoy some wine and painting at the “Sip n Paint”.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh my goodness! Yes!
First of all, Jesus Christ!-I can’t do anything without him!
My husband has supported me in EVERY way possible!-Literally!
My mom always has my back and helps me with events and cakes from time to time.
My best friend Minisha is my #1 Fan! She’s always the 1st one to support any event or new thing in my business.
My business coach, Lauren Friarson taught me how to become a “go-getter”!
RMMFI has helped me get a better understanding of the “business” aspect of things! Such as: marketing, operations, etc. and gave me access to grants and loans.
Mi Casa Resource Center really helped me early in my career with learning how to price recipes, draft a business plan,etc.
Polka Dot Powerhouse networking group has been super supportive in both my personal and professional life!
