We had the good fortune of connecting with Aubrie Nixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aubrie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My entire life I have never been particularly great at anything. I have been good at a lot of things, but never great. I wasn’t a dancer, an actor, a singer. I couldn’t draw beautiful pictures that were entered in contests. I was never an athlete. There was one thing I loved, and even though I was good at it, as a kid, I never thought it could take me anywhere like the things others were great at. I loved storytelling. Whether that be writing, putting together a group of pictures to express a certain feeling, or even music. I loved being able to take different art forms, and tell a story.

I have 3 published books currently, and I absolutely adore writing, and publishing. However, there is a part of publishing that many people don’t understand, and that is the marketing. The selling of your story to the masses. How can one stand out from the crowd to sell their story, in a sea of millions of others? That is a question that I love searching for the answer. There is no ‘one size fits all’ method. It’s a puzzle, and it’s a puzzle I am really good at- great even.

Being able to stay close to my passion of storytelling, and having the added challenge of an ever-changing puzzle, has been most fulfilling. I chose this path because it is my passion. It is what makes me great. And honestly….I kind of like being great at something. Young Aubrie would be so proud!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started Nixie Moon Marketing after nearly a decade of working for other businesses as an employee. I have quite the resume of marketing, executive assisting, and social media management. I loved each an every job I had. Well, parts of it. I began to realize that I loved the creative parts of my work. I was often given the tasks of social media manager, creative director etc….I made dozens of logos, workbooks, and was particularly good at branding. I grew tired of all of the other tasks at my jobs, and wanted to focus solely on the creative aspect of things. I searched high and low for a job that paid well, had hours I liked, and accommodated my skills. I couldn’t find it.

Going back a few years, I had done my own marketing for my own books. I had also done marketing for Winterwolf Press, Shadow Wolf Press, and a few Indie authors. When I was giving my full attention to publishing, and marketing I was happy. I wasn’t making a lot of money, but that didn’t matter to me because I loved what I did. Now you’re probably wondering, Aubrie, why didn’t you just keep doing it if it made you so happy? Well, life happened. I got divorced, I found myself a single mother in a world where money was key. My happiness and joy in what I did came second to providing a life for my son. I stopped writing, I stopped marketing, and I chose to work jobs I wasn’t exactly happy with to put food on the table, and have roof over our heads.

Over the next few years I gained a lot of experience through the jobs I took on, and was able to gain a vast network of industry professionals who helped me realize that I was good enough that I did have what it took to make it on my own.

I quit my dream job of Marketing Director in December 2021, and started my own company. I am so grateful for my husband (married in October of 2021) for supporting me, and encouraging me to follow my dreams, even if it means taking a pay cut for a little bit.

In the few short months since I started Nixie Moon, I have had many wonderful opportunities fall into my lap. I was made the Creative Director of Shadow Wolf Press, so I get to publish as many of my own novels as I want!
Plus, I will be opening submissions soon, and get to find some amazing stories to share with the world.
I started an amazing program with two fantastic humans called Ascension Academy. We launch in the Fall!

I want the world to know that it is possible to follow your heart. I recognize that it is also a very privileged, and rare thing to be able to quit a job that pays well, and pursue your dreams. I am so grateful that I was in a position to do so, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I was able to follow my dreams. Not only own my own business, I now have three businesses that I am very passionate about, and love working on each day.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take my friends to Red Rock Amphitheater. Even when there isn’t a concert going on, just sitting, and watching the sunset is one of my favorite things to do.

The Tattered Cover Bookstore is another must see!

There is no shortage of hiking, and beautiful parks to enjoy. Though, I must say, going to the dog park by my house in North Thornton and watching the dogs play is one of my favorite things to do. I may or may not take my dogs with us!

For a fun, unique bar experience Forest Room 5 is always a good time. Any of the speak easy’s around Denver usually produce wonder and awe in anyone I take.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother was an English teacher and always encouraged my love for reading, and writing. Since I was a little girl, my favorite thing was to go to the library, or the bookstore, and get as many books as I could carry. My mother was more than happy to oblige that habit. She always encouraged my reading. Come to think of it, I always wondered why my flashlight never ran out of batteries, and I never seemed to get caught reading way past my bedtime.
