We had the good fortune of connecting with Avery Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Avery, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson I have learned in my photography business is to not compare myself to others. This is such a creative field and there are so many different styles that it can be hard to not compare my work to those around me. I have changed my views from comparing my work to others to become inspired with others work. I also will reach out to peers with questions or advice on a location for a shoot or for creative ideas around a photoshoot. I love doing this because I want my photographer peers to feel like they can also come to me to bounce ideas off of and to collaborate!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is my personality and flexibility with my clients. I am a very bubbly person with a lot of personality, that I think makes most of my clients feel really comfortable and accepted with me. I always want my clients to feel they can be as open/candid with me. This is not the approach everyone takes, and sometimes I think I should be a little more on the conservative side, but I believe I get most of my bookings because of my personality (of course they like my work, too!). I have also started being more personal on my social media accounts to let my followers get to know me on a deeper level! I think this switch has added to my brand and is a way for new/returning clients to get to know me better and what to expect working with me will be like!
I want people to know that I am accepting of all clients and just want to bring their dreams and visions to life! I also love being the person my bride and groom turns to when they are stressed or needing advice. Being comfortable in front of my camera is my number one goal for my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite spots in the city is a little spot off of Upper Gold Camp Road with incredible mountain and trail views. It is actually one of my most requested locations for an engagement or family session! It is definitely a spot to just sit and enjoy the mountain views, but also makes for incredible photos, so of course, my favorite spot! It is also close to Old Colorado City so walking down Colorado Avenue is always a good idea for yummy food & drinks!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out my Fiancé Jake Mahoney. He is my biggest hype man and supporter with my photography career.

When I have creative ideas, he helps me plan them out to execute. He was so supportive of my idea to move to Colorado Springs to further grow my photography career, and I am so grateful to him. I would not be where I am today without his constant encouragement that I can be successful in life as well as this career.
