We had the good fortune of connecting with Ayjaytee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ayjaytee, why did you pursue a creative career?
All my life I’ve been told I’m different, multi skilled, multi talented etc. It wasn’t until the end of my senior year in high school that I told myself “I’m gonna have to figure something out other than college that I can thrive off of.”Of course I was always aware of my own talents as far as being able to sing and being a quick learner when it came to practicing instruments but for the longest I was too shy to really show my talents to the world. I wanted to prove myself wrong in regards to me being able to build a following off of talent and personality because I’ve been an over-thinker most of my life. I pursued my career for myself in other words!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most people would look me up on the internet and say “oh he’s an artist” and while that may be true, I’m so much more than just an artist and I’ve been waiting to get a chance to finally tell what my story is so far. What has always set me apart from others was that I didn’t do any of what I currently am doing to please others and I have always been the same person on or off of the internet. I’ve reached huge milestones as far as social media goes. I currently have over seventy-five thousand followers on TikTok, and just recently gaining over twenty thousand followers on Instagram. These may not sound big to some but it’s huge to me. I’ve reached over 5 million people’s account in the past 30 days and some of my content have reached big artists such as Rod Wave for example. I’d be telling a complete lie to say it was easy to get here, it took lots of discipline and dedication for a long amount of time. I overcame the constant obstacles by just not thinking about the negative feedback because most of the time it was me worrying about what someone may think instead of doing whatever it is that I want to do. I’ve recently learned that if I put my mind plus my drive and work ethic towards something it is almost bound to happen. I want the world to know that when it comes to a career you don’t have to choose just one.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would most likely take my friend to the downtown area. It all truly depends on their interest honesty, and the day of the week that it is. If it’s a Friday or Saturday, I might have us go to Polaris Mall. Sundays are one of the best nights out in Columbus if you have a passion for skating. Sundays at Skate Zone 71 are unmatched and even for people who may not actually skate, you could still have a good time with everyone and everything that’s going on. I’m not the most outgoing person when it comes to food, but we have a lot of burger spots if you’re looking for something basic, and we have rooftop experiences for a more special type of event. I might take my friend to Rooster’s if it’s their first time in the city though. Some of the best experiences out here are downtown activities such as scooter and bike riding and you can also see a good amount of artwork with us having the museums we do.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s many people I’m grateful to have met within the last year and one of the main people is Alton Shedrick Jr. (AJ). AJ reached out to me via Instagram last year in regards to seeing if I’d be interested in becoming an ambassador for his luxury streetwear brand DE’JARD. I never really had it in my mind that I’d ever become an ambassador of any kind honestly. As well as AJ I want to shout out a few photographers who have helped me better my portfolio and and that have also brought their own ideas to me that involve me being a part. Martez Knight is a creative director & photographer here in Columbus, Ohio who has brought multiple of his ideas to life around the city on top of keeping me involved. A lot of what people will see from me visual wise as far as music goes moving forward, Martez Knight is who I’m gonna have do it. Lastly for now, I want to also shoutout Ayana Jackson another photographer here in Columbus who actually did some of my first professional set of images for me. She has invited me to numerous shoots and has even featured some of the images she’s taken of me to magazines. These are all huge parts in telling my story and each person recognized deserves it as much as I do.
