We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbara King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Barbara, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“When God open doors for you, don’t you dare walk away from it. Walk through those doors with the utmost confidence.” To me it means that God gave me a path of direction and I have to take the path He has chosen for me, with the thought that I deserve it and I will let Him lead me every step of the way. Like the scripture say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is the art of creating beautiful clothes that tell a story along the way. I design clothes for people to look and feel good in what they wear. No matter if it’s a custom piece or runway. I am most proud of myself because I have been able to do fashion shows on my own and also with other designers all over the world. I have been published in several magazines and newspapers. Getting where I am today was fairly easy for me, but there were challenges along the way that I had to overcome. Staying committed to my work and time management was my biggest challenges. The lessons I’ve learned are believe in yourself, and if you don’t do it someone else will. I came from a broken home and was reared by my grandmother. I am self-taught. So, If I can do it with the knowledge, I gained along the way you can do it as well. all it takes is believing in yourself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to visit me the first place, I would take them is downtown to the riverwalk. Sea world, the Botanical gardens. I love Mexican food so I would take them to a Mexican restaurant. I don’t drink so that’s out. The movies would be the hang out spot.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I give God all the credit for my success. If it wasn’t for Him, I would not be here where I am today. Secondly my inspiration comes from my grandmother. She is the driving force for what I do. My husband and family deserve a little credit as well. They always had my back and supported me every step of the way.
