We had the good fortune of connecting with Billy Kidd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Billy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Life and Career is all about taking risks. If nobody took risks nothing would get done, there would be no inspiration for others, and we would be living in a world where nothing is possible. Risks are always work taking in my opinion. It makes us grow stronger and enhances our creative minds and abilities.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For the last 15 years I have worked professionally as a magician. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would ever become a magician but now it is all I do and my one true love. Prior to magic I worked only as an actor but the first time I saw a magician I knew something changed me. Almost like an internal quest that I could not ignore. I tried to ignore it but I knew deep down I had to become a magician, it was almost like a calling. I think what sets me apart is not only am I one of the few professional female magicians in the world; but my approach to magic might be different than most magicians. My background is purely theatre and I cannot help but add those elements to my work. Every routine I do, everything I write is researched and practiced to the extent where I know nobody is presenting their magic in the same way that I am. The ultimate goal is not to be like other magicians. Because of my approach every routine becomes my baby and is something I am very proud of.
I got to the where I am today by not listening to others advice. I put myself in risky situations that would force me to make magic my career and job. No plan B’s. It was very difficult but so worth every fear.
I had to imagine challenges that I would face almost 6 months in advance. Almost like living in the future. I made a goal for myself to be able to survive the next 6 months doing only what I love. If I could keep this up this is success to me.
I would love the world to know from my story that if you truly love something or have a passion to not let anyone or anything get in your way. We are not here to please one another. We are here to do our very best and be as happy as we can be. So why not follow your passions and do what you want. Give yourself risks and high stakes to force you into uncomfortable positions and you will be surprised what you can accomplish.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Colorado, I would go horse back riding in the mountains. I would eat and drink anywhere local. I would hang out in the parks and obviously go to the Underground Theatre at the Stanley Hotel.

If we are talking about Bath, England where I live….I would probably take you to Stonehenge to marvel at the mystery. We Would eat a Sunday Roast at my local Pub. Visit the Roman Baths and go for a bike ride along the canal. On a Thursday we would go to a live music venue for an Irish jig and grab some free cheese at the Star inn. People in England love tradition. But just sitting in any cafe people watching is always an adventure.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A book called Free Play by Stephen Nachmanovitch has been hugely inspirational to me and my work and life. Also a shout out to every actor, director, stage manager, choreographer, and magician that I have ever worked with. They all play a part in shaping me as a performer and a person. Too many to name individually.
