We had the good fortune of connecting with Billy Sauerland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Billy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Why, I don’t think I a choice. Well, not to have creativity a big part of my life. I just couldn’t see myself ever doing anything that didn’t have a creative element to it regardless what I ended up doing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m not sure that I really stand out from others, but I try to always look at things and present what I see in a different way. One of the things I try to keep in mind while I’m out shooting or planning a shoot is, all the big things are made up of the little things. For me this helps me to remember the details, and to focus on how they all connect to make the bigger picture. Either from the technical elements of the composition or how a particular image fits into the larger story I’m try to tell. I keep that in mind and apply it to my workflow and to business. I work each step in the process to facilitate the next step, to help maintain a bit of efficiency, creating your work can be a messy process so I try to keep the chaos reigned in.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, being that I live in Oklahoma and not Colorado I don’t think this is applicable to your magazine. But, there is a Nature Conservancy Preserve north of Tulsa. The Tall Grass Prairie Preserve at 39,650 acres its the largest protected piece of tallgrass prairie in the world. It works to preserve more than 700 plant, 300 birds and mammal species, including a herd of over 2500 free-ranging bison.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Mom, I’m not saying mom just because mother’s day just passed. Rather, she always demonstrated growing up, do the work. No matter what, you always have to do the work. Because nobody is going to do it for you.
