Meet Binx | Graphic Illustrator & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Binx and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Binx, what inspires you?
My favorite question honestly! Psychedelic retro art, anime, video games (a lot of late 80’s arcade and 90’s console games) and of course, my experiences from life. I can’t count how many times I’ve had a conversation with someone and they inspire me to create a piece later.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work stems from my love of fantasy and an outlet for my emotions. I was a timid child who got teased a lot, so I kept to myself and used art as a way to escape reality. It developed into what it is now through my influences of anime, video games, music and personal experience. The women I create reside in these colorful spaces where they live out my fears or desires.
I think what sets me a part from other artists is how vulnerable I am willing to be when it comes to explaining the concepts of my work as well as playing between my styles to fit my mood. I’m overall proud of my journey, the artists I’ve met along the way and still wanting to be an artist after all these years. It gives me something to strive for and I’m grateful for that.
I feel like I’ve stumbled into where I am professionally today and honestly want to make more of a name for myself. Most of my opportunities have come from networking and putting myself out there through honest conversations and having an open heart. That might be something else that sets me a part from others, you can feel my genuine passion for creating and just living for that. I wouldn’t say it’s been an easy journey and I don’t think it’s far from over. All I can say in terms of lessons is to just keep creating for yourself, know it’s not about comparing yourself to others and to just breathe.
I want the world to know and open themselves up to me for various opportunities and continue to watch my journey as I only hope to elevate my craft from here.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Haha, worst question for me! I keep to myself and the few occasions I do out are much rarer as I get older, especially after the pandemic. I’d want to take them to the Lincoln Park or Garfield Park conservatory (obviously getting high beforehand) and enjoy the nature. Also a discreet area where we can just sit by the lake and watch the clouds go by. We’d also go to Humboldt Park, since it’s so close and has it’s own magical appeal.
My absolute favorite place in the entire city is Buckingham Fountain when it’s warm. Something about the backdrop of the city/lake and the colorful lights at night makes me feel like I’m in a dream. I’ve felt this way since I was a child coming downtown with my mom to see her at work or go to art shows. There was always just something so exciting about Millenium Park and walking down Michigan Ave. What I’ve always appreciated about Chicago is it’s a great place to people watch.
Food wise, if they never tried Harold’s just for the mild sauce. The pizza controversy is real out here and my favorite will always be the original Uno’s (Due’s if you’re taking it to go) and Lou Malnati’s. There are some local gems I really appreciate like Ina Mae’s Tavern and the Violet Hour.
I’m also really into house music and dancing, so a stop at Smartbar would be a great finale if any.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s a lot of people I’ll always be grateful to. My college teachers for encouraging me to leave my comfort zone, Serf and Drop for letting my delve into graffiti, anyone who has ever bought my work, anyone who has ever given me an opportunity to showcase my work and lastly my best friend for giving me shit, but also being thoughtful in how to give feedback for honing my craft.
