We had the good fortune of connecting with Black Prez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Black Prez, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It might sound cliche, but in a way, it kind of chose me haha. I recorded a song “just for fun” when I was about 13 or 14 years old and then played it for some friends without telling them that it was me. The day went on and I circled back later asking what they thought of that song I played earlier mixed in with other popular tracks. They did not really have much to say about it. They just said “yeah, it was cool? I guess? why?” So then I revealed that it was me rapping and they kind of perked up in disbelief. “What? no way? that was you? play it back!” So I played it back and rapped along with it and then they were shocked to know that it indeed was me rapping on the track!
They thought it was cool, and so did I. I thought the moment kind of came and went until the following week and school, kids were coming up to me like “Yo, I heard that track you made! When is the next one coming out?” I would just respond like “Naw, that was just for fun, I am not actually a rapper or anything lol”. Either way, the kids kept asking for me, and I finally caved and recorded a few more songs. Next thing I knew, I was a rapper and continued on rapping until today and beyond.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is my versatility in my music. Personally, I am a very laid back and happy person with a positive and optimistic attitude. I think this carries over in my music as well. However, I can also make songs that are a little more aggressive or even motivational. Something that might even get you pumped up in the gym! I got to where I am today by having the right people around me and things falling into place when I needed them the most. It was never really easy, but I think I had the “right place at the right time” thing going for me more than once. I started making music and one thing kind of just leading to the next and I was able to continue pursuing it. There have obviously been many challenges, but I was able to overcome them because I had people who believed in me and kept pushing me to get better and do better. I think having this kind of team and assurance is very helpful.
A lesson I learned along the way is to keep trying. Keep figuring out new and creative ways to reach the results you are looking for. Also to experiment! Try something new! Don’t be afraid to fail and try again.
I want the world to know that a good attitude can go a long way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to a Rockies game! I am not the biggest baseball fan (more football and basketball), but I like the atmosphere at baseball games the best! I love going with friends, enjoying some drinks and food and taking in the nice weather. Red rocks is probably the best place in the world to watch a concert. I saw my favorite band “Earth Wind and Fire” there one time and I almost cried the whole time. It was amazing! Food. Wow. So much to choose from! It would definitely have to ben Mexican food, but I cannot name just one place! There are too many! haha Also, if you are downtown, I would recommend going to the BE A GOOD PERSON shop. They are a local business that makes dope clothes and have a dope concept. Also, the guys that run it, are some of the dopest people I know!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shoutout my DJ T-Bone Scarpone. T-Bone has always had a major influence on me and I appreciate him so much. T-Bone helped me develop as an artist and as a person more than anyone else I know. The thing is, T-Bone is the DJ, T-Bone is always in the background, but he deserves the most credit for most of the things I have done musically. He has always had my back and I am forever grateful to him. Not only is he a great DJ, but he can rap as well! He released an album a couple of years ago and it was pretty dope! He is also a great person that will bend over backwards for anyone that he encounters. He is also the worlds most interesting man! T-Bone passed away a couple of years ago and he is dearly missed. Ah-oooooh!!!!
