We had the good fortune of connecting with Blake Slatter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Blake, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business was the next natural step into photography. As my skills improved I felt like I could share and work on numerous photography projects for people. I also liked the idea of working for myself and having the freedom to go out and do landscape photography, the thing I love most.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

My venture into Landscape photography began during a tough time in my life. My idea of where I was heading was flipped upside down during this period. But the one thing I gravitated to and what gave me some life was photography. Most of my skills in this field have been self taught, a lot of trial and error and a lot of hours on Youtube (thankyou Nigel Danson). I think what sets me a part from others is my eye. Since I was self taught I wouldn’t consider myself to be a technically sound photographer. I think that’s why I’m so different from other artists. My love for minimalistic photography is forever growing and you’ll see that throughout my art. I believe it’s not what you leave in the frame, but what you leave out of the frame that makes for a captivating image. I should state that my dream is to be a fulltime landscape photographer. But I have also found myself enjoying rural aerial property photography and the odd portrait shoot. I think being able to be skilled in multiple aspects is very helpful. One of biggest challenge I would say is self belief and confidence. I’m learning not to compare myself to others, not just in photography, but in life. It can become really discouraging when you see all these photographer influencers on Instagram posting all these images from beautiful places around the world. I’m still being challenged throughout this journey and am looking forward to improving on my craft in the coming years. Building my brand/business has been a slow, but worthwhile process. It started with friends and family giving me an opportunity and from there, building up a bit of portfolio. I’m still continuing to build my brand and I’m excited to venture into some unique landscapes around Colorado and surrounds in October of this year.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, the most influential person has been my best friend Ian. We met in NZ in 2020 and clicked straight away. We bonded over our love for photography and were able to bounce ideas off of each other. I learned a lot from him. We are currently planning to see each other later this year and I’m so excited to get out and shoot with him again. I’d also like to give a little shoutout to my cousin Zach and his wife Jess. Both have been instrumental in helping me create my website (www.blakeslatter.com). There’s been countless people, friends and family that have gone out of their way to support me in my photography endeavours and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them, so thankyou.
