We had the good fortune of connecting with Bobby Cornwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bobby, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I got my first camera, I knew I was addicted for life. This was a passion that I knew I could happily do for a living. Starting my own business was an easy decision because it allowed me to learn at my own pace while developing my skills in all different types of photography. If I had chosen to work for someone else, I most likely would have only been focusing on one area.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is unique because my style isn’t set in stone. I definitely have developed a look, however I am still relatively new to photography in the grand scheme of things. I am always open to new techniques and styles as I continue to learn and grow. In that sense, I am always trying to learn from other photographers without shutting myself off to any new ideas stylistically.
Photography is an amazing form of art and art is about pleasing yourself. If you take the pictures you want to see and enjoy looking at then others will recognize that when they see the passion that you have for it.
I have learned to not always be such a harsh critic on myself. Nobody is perfect and neither is any photo. Embrace yourself and your work and others will do the same.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are multiple people who are responsible for where I am today. I always enjoyed art growing up. From the traveling and support I received from my parents to the inspiration of art teachers along the way, these people were my roots. My wife has always supported my interest in photography. She was the one who finally pushed me off the cliff. After hearing me constantly talk about wanting a camera but not wanting to pay for one, she surprised me with my first camera as a gift and I never looked back. Finally, my good friend Scott Bellow has taught me 90% of what I know about photography. He was already a great photographer when I got my first camera. He allowed me to follow him around while constantly asking questions. When I upgraded, I bought the same camera he had, just so I could understand exactly what he was doing and why.
These are the people that paved the way for me. These are the people that I am grateful for.
