Meet Brenda Melgar | Real Estate Agent, Kenney & Company Real Estate

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenda Melgar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenda, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
For as long as I can remember, I have been an artist. Growing up in Houston, Texas, the Livestock Show and Rodeo was a huge deal for the city – concerts, funnel cakes, cowboys and cowgirls, animals, and the Rodeo Art Show. I auctioned off artwork there at an accumulated $45,000, and I thought I would do it for life. I graduated from the top entrepreneurship program in the US at the time, the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, in hopes that maybe one day I would use that degree for something creative. Unfortunately, as an adult it became more difficult to conform into getting a “big girl job” that offered me flexibility, creativity, and emphasized my customer service skills. It took many years; I took a back seat as a stay at home mom for 8 years and encouraged their many awesome achievements, but eventually I knew it was time for me to be around more adults, nurture my own needs for community, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and use my creativity.
I’ve purchased two homes previously with realtor friends, so I was very familiar with the process and emotions that come with it. For fun, I helped friends in finding their own homes, so I’ve toyed with the idea of getting licensed in the past. I knew that once I dove in, my persistent and workhorse mentality would take over, and I needed my creative side to still have a voice. When I decided to truly pursue real estate, I dove in head first. I’m able to use my creativity through our social media platforms, painting closing gifts for my buyers, and teaching paint and sip classes for my clients or for charity purposes as well. I’m also blessed in having mentors and a community within Kenney and Company Real Estate that all encourage personal growth, accountability in both professional and personal life, and utilizing our God-given talents. It’s thrilling to be a part of a team of people who don’t focus on the numbers, but instead focus on being the best educator, advisor, and friend to our clients who are ultimately trusting us with one of the biggest investments of their lifetime.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a real estate agent at Kenney and Company Real Estate. I love hearing my clients’ goals and dreams for themselves, then getting out there to help them achieve just that! I get excited exploring all of Denver Metro with my clients as they share their reasons for why they love an area or why it would be ideal for them. I buy into the dream with them, and together we paint small strokes over the course of weeks or months… until we finally create the masterpiece – my client achieving their dreams of home ownership or building wealth through their first investment property.
It’s not easy. The biggest challenges to a real estate agent are work/life balance and self-motivation.
Since most clients work a traditional job Monday through Friday, a real estate agent’s busiest times are evenings and weekends. This means that family, friends, and hobbies can get sidelined. For me, multiple people told me early on that I needed to time block everything. If it wasn’t on my calendar, it wouldn’t get done, so unfortunately that sometimes meant that I’d miss martial arts or soccer practices for the kids, or I’d forget about date night with my husband. I finally time blocked both personal and professional events, while also choosing to wake up at 5:15am instead of 6:30am to achieve what I want to achieve for the day. For others, that could be different. It’s important to find what works for you, and continue to fine tune it til you are more efficient with your time. I recommend “Atomic Habits” by James Clear.
Self-motivation is another struggle. Have you ever had so much to do that you end up doing none of it? I’m squirrely like that too. But here’s the thing, you can’t win the race if you won’t even start. So I take it one step, one task, one reminder, one sticky note at a time. I’ve learned that I’ve got to be realistic with myself on what I have set to accomplish for the day, week, or month, and not only do the work, but also find the time to recharge. Finding ways to recharge is crucial, whether it be from watching a sunrise or sunset, painting, hitting the gym, prayer and meditation, time in the mountains, or spending time with a great network of people who will root for me as I succeed and likewise as I learn from a failure.
My family keeps me accountable weekly, and if I don’t accomplish what I set out to do for the business, my clients, or my family… I dust myself off, get up, and take a step forward to continue the race.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would certainly visit all the surrounding areas; Breakfast at The Buff in Boulder, followed by a hike at the Flatirons, then we’d go mountain biking in Golden at Flat top followed by Bonfire Burritos. We’d start the next day in Morrison for a sunrise at Red Rocks followed by a java trip to Morrison Joe’s. Next stop- Evergreen. We would have lunch at the Muddy Buck, where we’d have them drizzle their espresso balsamic dressing drizzled on everything we ate. We would dive deeper into the mountains, stopping at Edelweiss bakery in Idaho Springs for all the pastries they have, hike St Mary’s Glacier, and take in the mountain sights as we drove to Silverthorne where I would buy way too many coffee bags at the Red Buffalo Cafe. We would enjoy our cup of coffee out back at the creek, then continue on our merry way to Dillon, where we would either snowshoe the reservoir or canoe on it, depending on the season. After that adventure, I’d take them to either Breck or Keystone to ski if it’s winter. We’d hit the slopes for quite some time, stay at an airbnb overlooking the mountains, then take off in the morning for our final stop in Glenwood Springs. We’d eat all the tacos we possibly could at Slope and Hatch, check out the art gallery, ski the classic but always awesome Sunlight Mountain, check out the Crystal Mill, hike Maroon Bells, bike through the Glenwood Canyon Trail where a gentleman would run wildly and point in the opposite direction while yelling “Bear!” (Speaking from experience, maybe)…then come back to town to enjoy food at The Pullman or the Riviera Supper Club. We’d finish the trip with satisfying torture in the vapor caves, and finally melt at Iron Mountain hot springs for a sunset soak.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I’m thankful for my husband and kids for being so flexible and understanding with my time and for their overall support. I’m thankful to my broker for continuing to challenge me to be a better, more knowledgeable advocate for my clients, for putting up with my many, many Brenda version of Ted-Talks, and our team of Kenney & Co agents who I’ve undoubtedly cornered with questions. I’m thankful to my neighbors, friends, and family in Texas who all continue to love on me and cheer me on. Lastly, I’m thankful for my mini goldendoodle, Rocky, who knows more than anyone that fluffy snuggles are sometimes all I need after a weekend of showings.
Other shoutouts:
Andy Mineo’s “Coming in Hot,” and Red Buffalo Cafe in Silverthorne for fueling me each morning with their delicious Jazzy Java or Hazelnut blend; I couldn’t be so hyped for a day full of showings, open houses, and phone calls without either one!
