We had the good fortune of connecting with Bridget Lennon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bridget, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Boredom. I was stranded in State College, PA at the start of the pandemic. Just me, my roommate, and my camera. I had no car, no income and no where to go (ya know cause the world was shut down) so I had to make do. I started to teach myself how to animate and it led to me creating makeshift music videos, to then asking people to take their graduation portraits on Penn States campus to get some extra cash. My first photoshoot I got a rush of excitement and committed to buying a nicer camera and lens. Being one of few student photographers living near campus, despite it being shut down became my advantage. I began marketing myself and soon I had my own photography business. This business then turned into creating content for businesses downtown and even getting to work on set for blackbears music video ‘If I were U”. Now I am a wedding photographer and freelance content creator, continuing to learn, grow, and challenge myself everyday.
So what was my thought process? Honestly, there was none. I said yes to every opportunity even if I had no clue what I was doing. I faked it till I made it and look at me now!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am better than I was when I began photography, but I know I have not yet reached my full potential. Don’t get me wrong, I am so proud of where I am today, but I have this itch inside me that I cannot seem to scratch. Everyday is a new chance to be discovered or have my big break and I plan on grinding to better my craft until then. There is still so much to learn and so much to do!!! I started out doing senior graduation portraits at Penn State and making videos for THON, a 46 hour dance marathon for childhood cancer. Those were basically my two personality traits in college. Since graduating, I have pivoted to wedding/engagements and a little bit of content creation. I plan to continue shooting weddings because the market is BOOMING since the pandemic! My DREAM is to photograph concerts and travel with an artist/band… like c’mon how cool would that be.
What I love most about photography/videography is how you can go down so many different avenues. In five years, who knows, maybe I’ll become a real estate photographer…. I said maybe. But the beauty of my job is that people will always need photos and I will always be there to capture it, no matter what it is.
Quick story time! I have a friend who is extremely creative and successful, like works in the music industry in LA. I often compared myself to her successes telling myself I’m good, but not THAT good. Back in 2020 I was telling her how I was asked to film a recruitment video for their sorority. I said that I wasn’t going to do it because I never did one before and I wouldn’t know what to do. She said “So…. who cares you know how to film and you won’t learn something until you do it.” As simple as this advice was, she was right. Freelancing, especially, in the creative world, is all about doing things and figuring it out along the way. So if anyone out there is scared of doing something, literally just do it. Fear is the enemy. Just act like you know what you’re doing and soon everything will fall into place.
BLennon Creatives is all about experimenting, finding your niche, making money and having fun. When you look at my instagram and portfolio you’ll see a lot of different types of work. I am only 23 I am still figuring things out and seeing what I like! Life is a creative process and I’m here to have fun!!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well…. I live at my parents house currently. Not a super flashy destination, but hey we’re entering a recession so it’s cost efficient!
I am only an hour from the Jersey Shore so obviously we’d have to catch some rays. I am also a big ocean girly so I would make them get tossed by the waves with me. Recently, I have super big into roller skating and the board walk is the perfect place to blade around. I wouldn’t let my friend leave the beach until we saw sunset and had a picnic with some falafel pitas! Duh!
At night, I would set up an outdoor movie and watch some of my fav movies, such as, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Worst Person in the World and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. (I highly recommend watching all of these). The next day we would go to the yoga studio I belong to, followed by some brunch and thrift shopping. AND if we’re feeling crazy, we’d hit up some brewery’s/winery’s and of course have a photoshoot in our vintage clothes.
Does this itinerary sound basic? I have no idea nor care, but I do think I just typed out my plans for this weekend!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As cliche as it may be, my friends and family are my biggest support system. My parents and brother deal with me when I mess up and have a major setback. They ground me, remembering how young I am and that setbacks are apart of the process. Failure is necessary to get to the next level. My friends, oh my friends!!! I love them all so much! They have modeled for me no matter how ridiculous the idea is and have embraced the silliness of it all. Since I started my business in college they have been my biggest hype men and women. They’ve watched run around our college house spewing every business venture or creative idea that comes to my head.
I owe a lot to my support system because I have so many ups and downs, they are the people I vent to and share my successes with. The good, the bad, the ugly!!!
