Meet Briton Underwood | Owner-operator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Briton Underwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Briton, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
We had to move forward with the company without the “face” of the brand; but it was so much more complicated than that. As a family business, this decision immediately impacted everyone’s personal lives. Being in a business as a family, where every operator is somehow connected by blood or marriage makes some days feel like you are living the American Dream and building something alongside your family. Other days, it feels like Game of Thrones, where we are all trying to fall in line and understand our allegiances to the vision of the business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Bill’s Beds and Appliances is a family owned and operated home furnishing and appliance store, now with two locations serving Colorado Springs and Pueblo. We are very proud of the work we do in the community, partnering with different non-profits to give back. What sets us apart? We go above and beyond, building lasting relationships with our customers and the areas we serve. It hasn’t been easy, but it has been worth it! The biggest learning curve involve changing our mindsets; we all had to learn how to work for ourselves and own the process from start to finish. Along the way, we learned the value of supporting our community through building relationships with other businesses and entrepreneurs. For us, our value is in providing for our community and having the opportunity to work together as a family and a team.
I want the world to know that supporting small businesses is one of the best ways you can support your neighbors! The best investment you can make is to support local, support small, and do your part to make sure Colorado Springs continues having that small town feel while it continues to expand.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the way my coffee is made at Pike’s Perk! To start our morning off right, we would start there! Going up the mountain is a must, hiking through Cheyenne is an absolute treasure. In the city, I am a huge fan of Doug’s restaurant for lunch! I might pop over to Manitou and challenge my friend to the incline before settling in for a drink at the Whiskey Baron and catching a sunset over at Palmer Park!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Niki Cicak of Day Lily Salon and Spa is an absolute treasure to the small business community. The work she has put in across El Paso County, her Community and Cocktails monthly networking event and the one-on-one guidance she offers has really allowed us to realize our vision of our company. She is an amazing person to know and someone who gives back so much to our community! Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink has been transformative in how I approach operating a business. It has taught me to always hold myself accountable and question myself when I am trying to pass blame on to someone else for the vision not being executed to standard.
10x Rule by Grant Cardone taught me never to reduce my target and always amplify my efforts!
