We had the good fortune of connecting with Britten and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Britten, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Authenticity. My career as a professional artist been a personal evolution of feeling confident and comfortable with myself and my unique perspective of life. Each painting is an unveiling of an authentic and vulnerable expression. It’s in that unveiling that others have found a reflection of themselves in the art. There is a connection through an emotion or feeling. The more I stay true to myself and allow what naturally flows through me, the deeper the connection is with others.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My process is intuitive and I try not to overthink things. My studio is a sanctuary where I allow creativity to flow through me. I don’t try to control it and I am open to whatever appears on the canvas. Somehow when I don’t try, and I simply follow my natural inspiration, it’s all relatively effortless. I work from feeling rather than thought…If for some reason my mind wants to hijack the process, I will take a break and write in a journal, sit and listen to my thoughts or go outside for a walk. When I return to the canvas I’m usually back in my intuitive flow. I am true to this process for every painting including commissions. With commissions, I set an intention and I step into the feeling the client wants to create for their home or business. I prefer to meet the people I paint for, if possible, and ask them a series of questions. The answers I can translate to colors and movement. If I can feel it, I can paint it. IntentionalArtByBritten.com is my website for people who want to create a painting that reflects a specific intention and personal reflection. It’s a beautiful process! I also love doing commissions for commercial and public spaces. I recently completed several large scale pieces for a preforming art center in Scottsdale, Az and a huge piece for the entryway in a hospital in Kansas City, KS. For me, art in public places is essential for a thriving community. It’s a reminder of the soul of humanity, where we all can connect.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Denver, I like to walk so I’m hoping my mystery guest has good walking shoes. I might start with a walk through Cheesman park and stop for a coffee at Copper Door, then a stroll through the Botanic Gardens. Next stop would be the Denver Art Museum, the new exhibit, Biofilia, is spectacular and Lunch/happy hour at Leven deli is a good follow up. Later, maybe the theater, ballet, symphony, opera? I love concerts in the park with a picnic too. Or dinner at the bar at Potager is always my go to, delicious and friendly.
Trip to Vail: summer hike, Pitkin Lake trail. Have to jump in the lake at the top. Dinner in Edwards, Sato, or Juniper. Or if we are in Beaver Creek, Splendido is special, especially the chocolate souflee!
Day trip to Boulder, just to stroll and see the Flat Irons- also Eldorado Springs (I lived in this tiny town)
If my friend is up for it, I would set them free in my studio to create something. I love watching people discover a new expression and play with art. Then I might try to talk them into trying aerial yoga with me at Clear Light Yoga, nextdoor to my studio. Laughing while hanging upside down from the ceiling has made my life so much lighter!
