We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittni Gorman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittni, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was important to me to fill a need that didn’t exist in terms of how health and wellness are supported here in the US. Educating women and young girls, especially, about their own bodies and how they can connect with themselves relative to the world around them is crucial to overall health. For years my body and mind were disconnected from each other and in turn the world felt very confusing. As I began to study Ayurvedic philosophy, an ancient science-based medical system, the puzzle pieces fell into place and the understanding of what it means to feel balanced.

What should our readers know about your business?
My goal as an Ayurvedic Health Counselor is to empower individuals to take health into their own hands. Ayurveda is an ancient medical system based on the five elements (space, air, fire, water and earth) and considers the person as a whole rather than only the presenting symptom. We look to these five elements and how they manifest in the body. When out of balance, we see their signs of excess or deficiency. During our sessions, along with the wellness plan, clients will learn how to recognize and manage these imbalances in order to maintain optimal health and long-term wellness through any stage of life.

It is through my own health journey of confusion and disempowerment that I am now a certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor and am continuing to the next level of study as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with a focus on women’s health and restorative wellness. I am incredibly passionate about understanding the functions of the body because it provides us with so much power in making decisions about our individual health. One thing I received very little of in my health journey was compassion, and today that is a very important part of what I offer to my clients.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Get into the mountains! Breathe in the air, lay in the grass, feel the dirt on your feet. We are always surrounded by constant movement and doing that it is also important to just be especially with nature. Denver has great access to trails just outside of the city and makes for a wonderful day trip. Pair that with a trip to the RiNo arts district and your creative juices will be flowing!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My journey with Ayurveda began a few years ago when a dear friend gifted me with Kate O’Donnell’s cookbook, The Everyday Ayurveda. This book quite literally changed my relationship with consumption, the natural world, other people, and most notably myself. As someone who continually struggled with anxiety, Ayurveda began to provide a tangible way of understanding and validating this struggle. As I moved further into Ayurveda, my affinity for spending time in the mountains began to unfold with new layers of understanding for human connection to each other and the five elements; space, air, fire, water and earth.

I, too, had never heard of Ayurveda until this cookbook came into my life. While reading through the simple and beautiful recipes I realized I had already trended towards Ayurvedic cooking without knowing what it was! It was here that my interest grew from cooking, to learning about spices, to knowing what to eat based on how my body feels. As an athlete with anxiety this was incredibly life changing in a way that I was then able to understand eating for balance instead of routine. It is through my practices and understanding of Ayurveda that I have healed from anxiety and learned how to re-nourish my body and mind to live a purposeful, aligned lifestyle.
