We had the good fortune of connecting with Brook Huffington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brook, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is staying in my own lane, not getting sucked into comparing my work with other photographers, be present each shoot and listen to my clients. I truly love when I get behind the camera and the session unfolds, and after I deliver their gallery’s and get messages from them how I captured their family perfect.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Photography is super saturated but believing in yourself and your ability is important. I started out reading about how to “brand your business” which stressed me out because I love working and shooting all different kinds of scenes. Along the way I have focused on keeping my sessions as stress free as possible each session is different and I try to capture the unique character, personality, and way of life of each family, from engagements, weddings, maternity, newborn, events, brandings, senior, or the yearly family photos, When I edit after the sessions I like to do as minimal editing as possible and keep my photos on the natural side. My specialty is natural light and more lifestyle vs posed. My goal is to preserve the current stage in life, as a mom I know that these stages constantly change, some may refer to them as storms. After experiencing more loss then our family wanted in the last few year I noticed the first thing you do when you lose a loved one is look back on photos and so that was my big awe haw moment of why I love what I do so much is being able to preserve these memories for the next generation.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Going out and wondering in the woods fills my soul. I love the peace and quiet. Waking up before the sun comes up climbing to the highest point to watch the sunrise is perfection. I avoid big crowds if possible and love a good home cooked Steak on the grill. Going camping is always a great choice too and exploring the local trails on the side by side. In the summer going to the local rodeo with my family is always and good time and an adventure with one of the kids always having to go to the bathroom during the most exciting parts.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have always loved photography and have always had a camera since I was a little kid. It wasn’t until I had kids that the idea of becoming a “professional photographer” came to mind. My amazing friend Rebecca and supportive husband encouraged me to go for it. Everyone always says if you do what you love you will never have to work a day in your life. Coming up with a business name was my excuse every time I thought of taking that scary first step of starting a photography business. I have always been a shy, quiet, and affraid to have conversations with “strangers”. My love of Elk sheds and photography grouped together for the birth of Shedding Shots Photography started in 2017. Flash forward to 202o when I started my activewear network marketing business which lead me to personal development, getting out of my comfort zone and lots of conversations with people which remember I was scared of unless I was behind my camera. Then Sara Cripe reached out and introduced me WIN ( Womens In Networking) a group of women business owners that help collaberate with each other to build each others businesses. After I started believing in my talent and self worth I started seeing a huge shift in my Photography business. I believe all of that along with Gods amazing guidance lead me to win 2021 Gold best of teller for photography. It was the most amazing award to win being a 3rd generation of teller county. I am so grateful for all of my amazing clients that I am so blessed to work with. Each new session is just another chapter to my story and without all my amazing clients my continued success would not be what it is. They push me to continue to learn an grow.
