We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Shepherd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooke, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
For me, my family comes first. Being a mom of 4, it was really important for me to find a job that allowed flexibility. I am proud to say, I missed a handful of events/games between all 4 of the kids. I have a very supportive husband, so we just made it work! I think the key to finding that balance is clear communication with your family and spouse. Now that all of my kids have graduated and do not need me as much, I am able to focus more on my career. With that being said, my husband and I make sure to spend quality time together. We love going on dates and being grandparents!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from a-lot of other agents is the way I approach my clients when buying a house. My clients know my heart is in the right place. I talk to my clients about being house poor, that I will not let that happen. I don’t care if the lender tells you that you can buy a house for $700k. If your budget says $500k THAT is the price point we are looking at in homes. My military clients are very important to me as well, I know they could be moving in 3 years. I want to make sure they are going to be able to sell their house in 3 years and at least break even and hopefully walk away with some money in their pocket! It is not just about a sale to me, it is about taking care of people.
My biggest challenge….. When I went into this business 16 years ago, I thought it would be fun to help friends and family buy/sell a house. I had no idea the rollercoaster I was getting on. One of the biggest struggles for me to overcome was rejection. From family members and friends not using me, to people hanging up on me when I was cold calling. Boy that rejection hurts. However, it has also made me the person I am today. My skin is MUCH thicker. I have had to learn to not take it personally when people do not use me. I have worked hard to continue my education to be the best agent I can be. I know my value. I know I am a great agent that knows real estate.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a Colorado Springs native, I think that I can sometimes take for granted the beauty in this city. If I had a friend visiting, I would probably start off at the Garden of the Gods, it is so unique. We would enjoy a great hike and maybe even some lunch at the Kissing Camels Grill & Bar. Manitou is another place we would hit because of the penny arcade! I would definitely bring quarters with me so we could do the derby, who doesn’t want to do the derby?! However, I am not dong the incline! My knees can’t handle it! I will cheer them on if they want to do it! Fargos is a restaurant that brings back some great childhood memories and it is amazing pizza! We would have lunch or dinner in Palmer Lake, probably hit the La Casa Fiesta restaurant or O’Malleys for wings! Of course I am sure they would want to go to the top of Pikes Peak. Downtown Colorado Springs is pretty neat for early evening dinner. We would end the week at the Viewhouse taking in the view and eating some yummy food.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If I was to be honest, the support I have from my husband is why I am where I am today. When I am panicking about not having enough business, he calms me down and encourages me. When I have a crazy marketing idea he supports me and tells me to go for it! When I am worried about a deal, he tells me that it will work out and to focus on getting it to the closing table. When I feel in my heart that I need to reduce my commission or help a client. He 100% supports me, because he knows my heart is helping people. He reminds me that I went into this business to help friends, family and my clients . When I focus on taking care of them, it all works out.
