We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Conner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caitlin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I find that risks are necessary in life and business. Without risks, you limit your own potential. Some of the most successful people in the world are that way because they’ve embraced the changes that come with risk taking. Not everything will go your way, but you better believe there is always something to be learned. Try something new, go down the unbeaten path. You never know what you’ll find if you don’t first look for it.

What should our readers know about your business?
I run a nonprofit but also do freelance marketing for several brands. I act and model on the side and consult when needed.

Getting to the point of freelancing was hard. I first needed to learn my worth, stand up for myself, and believe I was capable. All three of those items can take a lifetime. I had a bad boss who was supposed to be a friend work me down to nothing. I did all the work and got little pay. It took the pain of working under a bad boss for me to see exactly how not to treat clients and employees. Starting on my own was painful but by having a boss that made me do everything, it taught me I was more than capable of being successful. I had all the skills, I just needed to believe in myself.

I got to see what bad marketing looks like. The failures of other firms showed me how to tailor my products and adapt them for the ever-changing needs of others. The products are not only better, my job is more fulfilling. The best part is, I know my bottom dollar and I set it. I was working for less than minimum wage for my last employer. I started paying attention to every hour I spent and vowed to never work for that low again. I couldn’t buy food for the rates I was working before and now I actually have a real savings.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Lucky for my best friend that I’m a top 10% rated local guide! If I have to stay in Houston then I’m probably going to start with something food related! Houston is the culinary capital of the South and a melting pot of culture. There are simply too many eateries to list because honestly it will come down to what style is being craved.

Cool places: Mural City for a fun photoshoot, weekend Farmers Markets for local goods, Cidercade for arcade fun, the cistern, memorial park, Minute Maid Park for and Astros game, and all the murals we can possibly find on the bike paths.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my biggest supporter is my boyfriend Brian. He’s always pushing me to try harder and search for inner strength. My daughter is next because she’s my constant motivation and pride.

My family, my friends, Baker O&P, the community I serve and those who cheer me on along the way.
