Meet Candice Fabry | Owner, Mentor and Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Candice Fabry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candice, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Through my lived experiences as a woman working in sports, and through the numerous conversations with peers, I knew there had to be a more reliable and consistent way to bring support to women and minorities working and participating in sports. I have been a part of a number of groups that had always mentorship as one arm of support, but it was typically met with a lack of resources and consistency in experience. I figured in the technology we have available today, providing mentorship to women in sport, regardless of where they live or where they work, is completely possible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Candice Fabry is the owner of Fearless & Capable, a female-led sport mentorship program, and the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Ottawa University (KS). She has been coaching soccer for over 15 years across varying levels within the game and Midwest region. Additionally, Candice is serving as the Associate Head Coach of the KC Courage Women’s team in the UWS and as an ODP coach for the state of Kansas and Midwest Region. Candice is a US Soccer Grassroots Instructor and has enjoyed the opportunities to host both coed and all-female courses in Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois. A native of Naperville, Illinois and former collegiate player at the University of Toledo, Candice resides in Kansas City with her husband and two children.
One of the most impactful experiences in my personal life and professional career was the sexual assault I experienced from my head college coach, turned boss when I committed to stay on as a volunteer assistant coach. The story in detail was most recently covered in The Guardian this past July 2022, but this lived experience has brought out the worst and best of me. Creating self-awareness of my habits, my triggers, and understanding my behaviors and thoughts have been the biggest hurdles. But the brand name of Fearless & Capable is a mantra that I have lived by throughout all of it. Despite my fear of what could happen or may happen, I still take steps forward towards what I desire most personally and professionally, and I do that because I believe in my talents and capabilities to succeed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Catching a match is on the itinerary as a soccer-loving individual. The atmosphere of a soccer match is hard to compete with, and I am someone who likes to observe the environment and culture, more than engage in it. Watching the sidelines, the field, the fans, the supporters, all of it – there’s something to be said about what those days can do to “fill your cup”. Post-match, finding some of the best local pubs or Mexican restaurants is always a go-to. Whether it’s a cold beer or a margarita on the rocks, a good conversation about our lives and where we want to take ourselves can be some of the most interesting and insightful.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My immediate family deserves an enormous amount of credit. My husband, Paul, who always has my back and supports me in ways I will never be able to fully repay. My parents and sisters that have sat through the countless brainstorms and provided honest feedback and support. And to my kids who inspire me daily to be fearless.
