We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Lawson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caroline, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks is the main reason I’m here today. On a larger scale, it’s a risk to even get into a creative industry since there is no guarantee of success or financial stability. Another risk that has created a huge impact in my career was the decision to quit my job in order to pursue freelance product photography full-time. With more time being focused on working and growing my business, I’ve been able to get more work than ever.

I am really just proud of myself for being able to do something I’m passionate about as a full-time career. Self doubt and “Imposter Syndrome” is a huge challenge that I have to work to overcome daily. Being in this industry is hard work and you really just have to take it as it comes. I have made many mistakes in my business and I know I will make many many more, but I learn from them and move on. It’s really helped me grow as a person, a business owner, and a photographer.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create bright and clean imagery focusing on health and beauty brands and products. I love working and playing with color, texture and dimension within my images.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Charlotte, NC is such a great city with so many things to do, we could spend a whole day at breweries alone. Some of my favorite breweries are Sycamore, Heist, and Wooden Robot. Charlotte also has the National Whitewater Center about 20 minutes away that has white water rafting, bike trails, and lake kayaking with such an awesome atmosphere.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This list could go on forever! My family was extremely supportive from the very beginning, even with the worry of financial stability that comes with a major in photography. The teachers, alumni, and the other students in the Commercial Photography Department at Appalachian State was a huge source of support and mentorship that I will never forget. Thank you to all my friends and family for continuously believing in me and this business.
