We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassy Cyanide and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cassy, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am originally from New Jersey, the Jersey shore to be exact. I got my start in modeling in New Jersey and then I started doing burlesque in Philadelphia. The east coast is a much more fast paced environment than here in Denver. I think that fast pace I’ve kept has helped me be the burlesque kitten (kind of like a stage manager) I am today, keeping shows at a steady pace. It’s helped me stay continuously booked, with multiple shows a week.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being in burlesque and being with model always comes with a lot of challenges. I struggle with Body Dysmorphic Disorder so continually keeping up with being in these two fields that are so focused on body image presents its own obstacles. However, it has also immensely helped me, exposure therapy is the best treatment plan for BDD and constantly being vulnerable on stage in front of an audience or posting photos of myself for all of the internet to judge is like the ultimate form of exposure therapy for me. On top of my personal issues, there is always the societal stigma against burlesque as an art form. It may be more acceptable now, but there is still a long way to go on accepting those of us who show our bodies in any way for an art form.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always love to take people to Meow Wolf for a fun, immersing experience. If there’s a concert in town, The Ogden is my favorite venue for shows here in Denver. Being from New Jersey, I always am on the hunt for a good pizza spot and Fat Sullys is the best spot in the city for pizza.
My friends I’d have to take to visit Horrid and Learned Lemur for some horror and oddities shopping.
And of course, I’m an avid hockey fan so we’d have to check out an Avs game over at Ball Arena.
To top it off, we’d have to hit a burlesque show either at Lions Lair, HQ, Horrid or catch the Sideshow at Learned Lemur.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always have to shoutout the two people that gave me my opportunity to come into the Denver burlesque scene: Alabaster and Reid Wilson (aka Babyface Reid). Without them I am not sure I would even still be doing burlesque. And of course Presley Peach for taking me under their wing out here as well. I also have to shoutout Aaron Chavez for really breaking me into the modeling scene out here as well.
