We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Phelps, Laina Phelps and Kayla Livingston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chad, Laina and Kayla can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We each come from similar, yet very different backgrounds in regards to religion and trauma. Each of us have struggled with mental illness and coming together to create designs was a way we could each heal a little. We figured that if we were struggling with the various, seemingly conflicting identities within ourselves, others were too. We have found belonging in embracing the chaos of our various identities and want others to feel comfortable doing the same.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
All three of us were raised Mormon. We were given very set roles we needed to fit into. None of us fit those roles very well. We’re queer and don’t identify with strict gender roles. We each have a fairly dark and crass sense of humor. We also are very sensitive to shame based tactics. We have done a lot of work to deconstruct those unhelpful narratives we took on from the religion we were raised in. Our art has provided us a way to make space for the parts of our identities that have been hard to embrace. We are really excited that we have been able to create such an eclectic group of designs – designs that make us laugh and feel seen. We hope our designs help others to feel seen as well in small or big ways.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d start the day off at the Parker Farmer’s market to support local vendors. We would go out for brunch and drinks at Happy camper before heading to Stanley Marketplace. There is so much too look at there that we could be there for hours, of course eating at the Denver Biscuit Company. We would then end the day off at The Beer spa. Each day of the week we would visit other places like: Upstairs Circus for Mimosas and crafting, Mochinut for Korean hotdogs, brunch at and walk around Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We owe a ton of credit to our families and friends that have supported us throughout this process! Our friend Delilah has been a super promoter for the business. Our kids, Laina and I (Chad) have 4 and Kayla has 1, have been a huge encouragement for us to do this business. Not only for financial support, but mental and emotional support for them. Here’s to giving them a better start at life than we had!
