We had the good fortune of connecting with Char Griess and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Char, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My parents were business owners, and as I grew up, I always admired them for that – it seemed normal to do. During a trip home over the summer, I realized I love connecting and encouraging others, and am beyond passionate about running. I got my own run coach about a year ago and I’ve made incredible strides in my running since then. I thought about how many run coaches there are and how I could potentially be entering an already saturated market, but then I realized every market is saturated. I thought: I know I’ve got something here and I could be the right coach for someone who is looking to reach their running goals with guidance. With 11 years in the food industry, alongside ingredient knowledge, and endurance fueling experience, I can offer a unique service to athletes.

What should our readers know about your business?
As a run and endurance nutrition coach, I believe in investing in my athletes. Frequent communication and adapting to each person’s life as they ebb and flow is going to benefit and grow my relationship with the athletes, and benefit what they can get out of my coaching. I pride myself on the knowledge I have about fuel and creating authentic relationships with each runner. Anyone can get a 16-week training plan, but creating something specific to each athlete is where true growth happens.

I’ve learned that overnight success does not happen. The time and hard work must be put into the business in order to see growth happen. If it was easy, then everyone would do it. The time I’ve spent growing my business has come at an expense to my free time, since I do this outside of my corporate job. You have to be willing to have quiet dedication and understanding/supportive people in your life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d book a reservation for Spuntino the second I knew what night they were coming into town – because who doesn’t love pasta?! Then the next day, in natural Colorado fashion I’d plan a hike for us nearby, followed by a brewery stop at New Terrain (or one of the tons around). On their last day we’d spend some time going on an easy run in Wash Park and hit up Alma Fonda Fina for a happy hour before they fly out that evening.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband is the most supportive person and without his support, I wouldn’t have jumped into this journey. I wouldn’t be traveling all over the country to races and making “runcations” out of a race. I am truly lucky to have someone who believes in me, just as much, if not more, than I believe in myself.
