We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlie Hoch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is important in any part of life or business. Without risk, you’re not experiencing anything new and not opening yourself up to new opportunity. Your chance to be great requires risk. However, there are different forms of risk. There is blind risk, which no better than gambling. Taking a shot at something with no real gauge on your success opportunity, just closing your eyes and jumping. Then there is calculated risk. This is a much more preferred form of risk. The stakes can be very high, however you’ve done your diligence and the risk, though still a risk, becomes much less of a hopeful leap and more of an executed plan.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a creative person is such a key piece to being an entrepreneur, but even more crucial when being an inventor and product developer. When I was a teenage in high school I started a vinyl sticker business called Charlie’s Signs and Banners. This was my first exposure to creativity crossing paths with business. I would meet with clients to design their logos and signs for their businesses, then I’d cut and install the decals. (the margins were great!) That exposure to vector art gave me the background I needed to leap into packaging design when the time came and my career in product development progressed. My most fun contributions to my businesses have been the creative packing I’ve engineered and designed. That relationship between the behavior of a consumer and the packaging on the shelf is something I’m still intrigued and excited by. It’s the opportunity to be endlessly creative that drives me to be an entrepreneur.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Easy – Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride. We would do the classic southwest Colorado tour. We would drive remote mining 4×4 roads, sleep at a network of friends cabins in the mountains, and enjoy the mountain air across the southwest above 12,000ft. It’s hard to bring people to this area and not blow their minds on the Via Ferrata in Telluride. That is the type of experience that stays with people forever, especially if they have never been exposed to something like that. I like getting the blood pumping, then grabbing a pizza at the local brewery.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been so many people along the way that have provided me support to chase my dreams. My wife Olivia is my number 1, without her nothing is possible. Then of course my brother Bruce. Bruce and I have been working together for the better part of a decade, in the trenches together, solving the biggest problems our businesses face, together. The two of us truly compliment each other in our talents and our skillsets, making us an unstoppable team.
