We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, how do you think about risk?
Regarding the idea of risk within our general Western society, there really is only two ways you’re told to look at it: Outweighing the Benefit vs (Negative) Consequence I try to look at risk as an opportunity.
Throughout my personal and professional life, I have never been squeamish with the thought of risk, mostly because I have made myself tolerable to it over time. Much like in the scene from “Princess Bride” where our hero defeats Vizzini in the test of wits by poisoning both goblets with the deadly iocaine powder that he had grown a tolerance to over the many years prior. To compare, I have treated risk as my personal iocaine powder over the years, so to speak.
To give you a better understanding of my attitude, rugby was the main sport I pursued for over 12 years, from high school to my mid-twenties. Not only is this sport beautiful in my opinion, but in fact, it is utterly brutal. Over the years, I had used the sport as a way to train my mind and body when it came to risk and reward. Fortune only favors the bold, as the saying goes. And my fortune was pursuing the sport professionally in New Zealand, where the game is seen as more of a religion. But to bring this story together, in between my collegiate years and New Zealand, I had been injured multiple times and had undergone two major surgeries that almost made me quit the sport – resulting in a complete ACL reconstruction in my knee, and with replacing a degenerated disc in my neck (C-7). After those two operations, the doctors told me I had a 80-90% chance of never playing the sport again, and even if I did play, the chance of reinjury was very high.
After much contemplation, I ultimately decided that we only have one life to live and if I didn’t pursue my childhood dream of becoming a professional sportsman, I would have regretted it forever. So over this 2 year stretch of intense physical rehabilitation, countless hours of painful restrengthening of my knee and neck – I had begun the process of seeing risk as not a liability, but an opportunity. I ended up traveling to New Zealand, playing high-quality competition for a year, having the best season of my life, then all coming down to a crash by tearing my other ACL. I wept like a baby knowing my career was fully in the rearview mirror at that point, but the risk had come full circle in the form of another injury. Unlike many others who told me it was a foolish venture, I had seen this risk’s consequence as an opportunity that I take full advantage of, even to this day. Without taking on the risk, I would have never fought tooth and nail to return to the sport and build my confidence. I would have never taken the chance by moving to a faraway land where I knew no one, all the while gaining dozens of lifelong friends from all over the globe. I would have never had the sense of great personal achievement that I conquered, and came out a stronger man. I would have never used that newfound mental strength to push my professional boundaries to become the realtor, partner, son, brother, and friend I am today.
Without risk (or iocaine powder, for that matter) there would be no journey, no story, no obstacles, no achievement. There would only be regret and the feeling of a life not fully pursued.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Through title, I am a Denver Real Estate Agent. But truly, I see myself as a mentor and guide for others to help them achieve financial independence and freedom from the harsh cycle of life and work. Real estate to me has always been a wonderful achievement to own your own home, land, and then create wealth by time alone. Leaving your mark on this world in owning a piece of the Earth is not only a great feeling, but you finally become a grounded member of the community you choose.
To be completely honest, it has not been easy to get where I am and even where I want to eventually be in my career. This industry change has been a shock to my system, albeit in the best of ways. I have learned so much from countless mentors and other individuals that have given me and others, their time and best practices. Although the downside of this industry lets you be in touch with individuals who are completely in it for themselves and will not treat you justly or fairly. But as life teaches us, not everyone is nice nor kind – so, trying to be the best version of yourself and hoping it spreads like wildfire onto others is the ultimate goal for cooperative dealings.
The real estate industry itself is absolutely crazy, with no future change of the current energy and focus of tons of motivated buyers, sellers, lessening amounts of inventory, with those vying for a chance at owning or upgrading their piece of the community. My personal brand or way of doing business can be better explained below!
WHOM I SERVE:
The hungry first-time home buyers, motivated sellers, and savvy financial investors – who are willing to create a prosperous future for themselves through the Denver Real Estate market.
WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU?:
I counsel and mentor those individuals in the direction of the greatest 1) benefit, 2) happiness, and 3) financial return they could receive through their home investment.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM I SOLVE?:
Buying or selling a home will most likely be the biggest purchase/investment of your life. Through this process; Complexity, confusion, and stress can make you feel powerless. I promise to not only simplify the process but to be an exceptional champion on your behalf. Ultimately, providing you more confidence and a feeling of ease every step of the way.
HOW WILL I DO IT?:
It helps to be incredibly passionate and driven towards your career, and your associated goals. Aside from being a former rugby professional, running ultramarathons, traveling the world, and creating my own financial freedom – It is my life’s work to help others realize and achieve their financial independence potential, through real estate.
Staying informed, relevant, and omnipresent are the basic ingredients to my own formula – but, my creativity, persistence, and vision separate me from the rest.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Usually, friends tend to visit for 3-4 days at a time, but if that were the case, here’s my itinerary! 1) Pick them up at Union Station and immediately place their bags in a storage facility just around the corner so we can explore the heart of Downtown!
2) Viewhouse or Fourteener Brewery, to give a great view of the city while they acclimate to the new altitutde.
3) Head on over to Rino to finish the night with some awesome eateries, bars and local fun activities like Karaoke or billiards.
4) Next day take them to Nixons Coffee on Louisiana St, then go on a walk around Wash Park to really get a cool look at some awesome houses!
5) If it were spring, go to see the Rockies play! Or fall/winter see the Nuggets, Avalanche, Broncos or CU Buffalo football.
6) Next day go for a hike close by in Idaho Springs then go check out hot springs to ease our aching muscles.
7) If there is a concert at Red Rocks – this is a MUST!
8) Lastly, on a chill day go check out an art museum or walk around downtown to some historical venues before saying bye at Union station.
