We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Hull and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christopher, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was guiding fly fishing trips and spending astronomical amounts on low-quality and inconsistent flies so I took to tying them myself. Soon after, I had random clients and guides asking me to sell them flies. I decided that doing something I’m passionate about is more worthwhile to me. Thus, Colorado Fly Angler was born. Our goal is to put high quality, consistent, original and exclusive patterns into the hands of people who enjoy the craftsmanship at a lower price.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My attention to detail, the person to person contact,, and the custom option availability sets me apart from the rest. I pride myself on putting flies in fish mouths and seeing photos of happy customers. Colorado Fly Angler measures it successes in smiles and memories made, not in dollars of flies sold or the inches of trout caught. Colorado Fly Angler likes to educate others on the importance of protecting our resources for future generations to come.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Montrose, CO is an amazing place that is at the center of the outdoor sportsman’s world. We are conveniently located within 30 minutes of the Black Canyon National Park. The Uncompahgre, Gunnison, and Colorado rivers are all located within an hour and half. The night life is defined by a vibrant Main street scene that offers local gourmet and drink options. My local favorites are Looney Bean Coffee Co. Tacos and Beer (yes, that’s the name and all you need to know- it’s that good), and Crash Burger. I recommend checking out the town of Ouray while you’re in town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe my success as a tyer to the many friends, guides, fly shops, and tyers who have taught me what I know. My customers are also responsible for my success, as they motivate me to tie better flies all the time.
