We had the good fortune of connecting with Corey Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Corey, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I have to be much more deliberate in scheduling both work and life. I put classes I enjoy and fun events I see on my calendar so that meetings are not booked over that time. I also take half days off if I don’t have meetings for a four hour stretch. When life is scheduled in, I have to consciously move or delete it and be ok with it. It is way harder to add life to your calendar once the week starts then to have time already set aside and be able to move it around.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a life long learner and ok with pausing life to pivot along the way. As an active person, I spent most of my career working for outdoor brands which were food focuses and sustainability minded. Triple bottom line business taught me it is not all about profit, but also people, planet and your community.
I poked around in areas of business I did not contribute to directly but had an interest in and saw an opportunity to improve, mostly around sustainability. During COVID, my position was eliminated and I was moved to special project, primarily around the businesses impact. both economically and socially. I did not go to school for sustainability, although I have a lot of other degrees, it is just want I like and had the opportunity to grow within the field.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Lots of outdoor adventures. If it is winter, I would snowshoe Jones Pass and spend a few days skiing AspenSnowmass with a day stop at A-Basin because it is iconic. In the summer, probs AspenSnowmass again and some mountain biking in Buff Creek.
A day in Denver would start with breakfast Denver Biscuit Company and then spot by a farmers market. Denver has so many great patios in bike riding distance. We would probs hop around the Platte and Creek Creek paths checking out food and bevs.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Manager can make or break your career path to a large extent if you let them. I am a pretty determined person who has been lucky to have managers who are not only encouraged me to follow my interests, but also open door that I had no direct path to open. You have to ask for what you want and make your interests known so that people can help you.
When I need a gut check, I ask people in my life who know me specific questions. Even to my husband, I ask specific questions. They may be broad, but the are not “what do you think?”.
