Meet Corri and Chase Mehan | Owners

We had the good fortune of connecting with Corri and Chase Mehan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Corri and Chase, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The oddity community is large, but the supply is surprisingly small. It’s hard to keep stock of “hard to find” and “unique” items- so we’ve had to make a choice, that, when we find great stuff- into the shop it goes!

What should our readers know about your business?
We are the only oddity and curiosity shop in Greeley Colorado. Although there are many oddity shops in Denver, we feel that we have a wider selection then most. We have 5 different artists and Chase and I bring in new items almost weekly. We go to estate sales all over Colorado and find items that we feel are unique and go with our store. We are most proud of our snarky, or some may call “dark” look at things. For example, Our candle sticks and ashtrays are lovingly nestled with beautiful depression glass, in a case labeled “blunt- force objects”. Chase and I decided in January that we wanted to get out of the mundane corporate life and start something that is our own and we can grow to be what we want it to be. We poured our savings and 401ks into it, knowing it will be a while before we get it back, but now that we are here, we can see this was a NEEDED shop in northern Colorado, and it was actually a great investment! It hasn’t been the easiest start, especially not knowing how the community would respond and after covid, but we’ve been welcomed by so many and we’ve slowly been gaining every month! Something we had to learn quickly is, when the weather isn’t nice, the traffic is low. So we’ve had to explore on line sales and live sales to keep us going during that slow time. The Strange and Unusual is a unique brand, because we strive to hit the MANY faces of the oddities market. From taxidermy and bad taxidermy, to tarot, kids halloween items and even true crime murderabelia. Our goal is to bring a little bit of everything here, so that each customer feels included in one way or another, and finds something new to take home with them each time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you are heading to downtown greeley to see us, be sure to check out some of our favorite spots! In the afternoon you can stroll downtown’s shops like the make up shop, Girl Talk or the game store called The Nerd Store. Lunch is served up fresh at The Cow, and there’s a misting station over at The Rio for those hot days. When you’re on an evening date, be sure to check out Lunas tacos before going to The Kress for an intimate movie. Afterwards, you should definitely wander down to the Speakeasy…. don’t know where it is? Don’t worry, Just make some small talk with the bar-tender in the theater, they’ll tell you where to go!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We owe a great deal of thanks and credit to our family, for backing up our decision and supporting us at the shop! Seeing them create their own businesses, our work hard and gain the rewards in the end of it all- has given us the push we needed to jump into it! We’ve gotten so much encouragement and feedback that it has really made us grow into what we are today. And we will continue to make them proud and push harder to become something that will stay around for years to come!
