We had the good fortune of connecting with Cort Carpenter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cort, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As a full-time singer/performer in the country music world, the work life balance gets difficult sometimes. Playing shows, touring, and just trying to keep up with the everyday trends gets exhausting. Since I have a 15 month old son now, my everyday schedule has changed drastically, but in a good way. Instead of being mentally taxed by the music business every single day, I’m able to step away and just be with my son one-on-one which really is refreshing. So overtime, it has changed, and it keeps on changing everyday. Now I actually have a better balance and know when to shut down the music side of things each day.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a country music artist in Nashville TN. I moved here with my wife just over 10 years ago, and have been chasing my dreams since then. I believe what sets me apart from others is my competitive heart. As an ex standout 3-sport athlete, and division-1 baseball player, I learned what it takes to be a champion. I’ve done so many things in my life thus far, and have had so many incredible experiences. I feel that competing at the highest collegiate level, balancing school and sports, and everything in between sets me apart from most.
I’m most proud of how much I have accomplished in my life, and also just in the 10 years I’ve been in Nashville.
I got to where I am today by chance. I was singing locally back in WA State with friends and family, and I was given an opportunity to form a band and start performing. The rest was history. I’ve been working my ass off in Nashville hoping for my opportunity to be heard by the right people, and won’t stop until I get my shot. It’s been tremendously difficult and frustrating, but I still love the dream I’m chasing because I’m right there doing what I love.
The biggest lesson I have learned in the Nashville music scene is that very rarely do people follow through. There is so much music going on in this town, that the industry tends to cling to a certain group of people/artists/writers and doesn’t allow a lot of people in from the outside.
I want the world to know how grateful I am for those who listen to my music, buy tickets to my shows, like my social media posts, and just support my journey. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Sounds cliché’, but its the truth.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite go-to spots in the city of Nashville during a week long trip would be:
-Hitting up the Honky-tonk’s for live country music and partying
– Catching a show at the Grand Ole Opry or the Ryman.
– Heading to midtown to attend Whiskey Jam on Monday’s and Thursday’s where up and coming artists are performing original music to a lively crowd.
-Catching a Nashville Predators or Nashville Sounds game.
– Hitting up Top Golf with the friends for some Golf and food/drinks.
– Some of my favorite food spots include: Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse, Bar Taco, Uncle Julio’s, or Nectar Cantina.
Honestly, the city is so full of incredible options of entertainment and food, that it’s nearly impossible to tell anyone where to go. Drop a pin on your phone, and I bet wherever you end up, you’ll find something incredible. The city is that amazing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think my shoutout goes to my parents have have been there from day one when I told them I wanted to “sing”. I had never performed in front of anyone before my career began. I kind of fell into the singing world after doing it for fun, and the rets was history. My parents, being my biggest supporters in the world in anything I do, have been there for me in every way possible. They have helped and pushed me to chase my dreams. I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career if it wasn’t for their support. Period.
