We had the good fortune of connecting with Courthney Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Courthney, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I recognized that there was systemic problem while in medical school and deceided to be the cahnge needed to serve the vulnerable.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I view myself as an artist because of how I view the issues I feel called to address. As a doctor we are called to serve and heal. As a social entrepreneur, I am obligated to create options that directly affect change in the lives of the vulnerable and weak. Activism is important because we live in times when those focused on ignorance and bigotry depend on inaction and complacency. I actively work to highliht and address inequities. The work I do is exciting and difficult. It keeps me engaged in ways that focus me. It was definetely difficult to become a doctor. During my matriculation through medical school, I experienced homelesseness. I had to navigate that reality while pursuing my dream of becoming a doctor. The homeless community embraced me and I vowed that I would use my degree to serve them. I witnessed firsthand the resilience of this population and was inspired. Today, I am proud to own and operate two companies that work to create change. Business does not have to be something that is exploitative. It can elevate and inspire while giving you an amazing and fulfilling life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend came for a long weekend I would love for us to explore together.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give a shoutout to my father and mother for instilling in me the importance of education and exemplying resilence and commitment to humanity.
