We had the good fortune of connecting with Dani Oprea and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dani, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I disagree with the advice “if you love something, make it your job.” While I think many people are excited about the idea of doing what they love for money, I believe it’s important to separate money-making pursuits from your passions. I’m not saying that you can’t make some money off of the things you love, but as we all know, money can be very stressful. If you bring that stress into your passions, I think it can ultimately make you hate the things you love to do, or at the very least, make them less enjoyable. Moreover, I think there’s no shame in working a 9-5, or some other type of job, and then doing your passion projects on the side. Sure, it would be amazing to have more free time to make music, but I’m glad that I’m not forced to make music for the sake of paying my rent each month. That helps keep me motivated whenever I sit down to work on music.
What do you think makes your project unique?
I think what sets me apart is my commitment to keeping my art and project fun and authentic to myself. I often see a lot of other musicians catering to the wants and needs of fans but for me, I always want to do this for myself. I want to make sure I’m always happy with what I’m creating and putting out into the world. If others like it too, that’s just a bonus.
I’m still very much working through the ranks of my career. It hasn’t always been easy, I’ve often doubted myself and my project. However, I’ve drawn inspiration from artists that have never given in to trends or the popular sound. Those artists have shown me it’s possible to stay 100% honest to your craft and still succeed. That’s what I want the world to know.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much to do in Denver! I would say first and foremost, we have to do some hiking. I’d take them to Red Rocks of course, and then I’d take them on my favorite hike in Golden Gate Canyon – Racoon Trail. From there, I’d make sure we see at least a few concerts. If we could see a show at Red Rocks that would be great, but also Mission Ballroom would be amazing as it’s such an incredible venue. I’d also love to take them to some more intimate venues around the city like Hi-Dive.
For food, there’s so much to choose from. We’d definitely get some burgers at Park Burger and grab some drinks at Nocturne or Larimer Lounge. I’d also want to get some pizza at Pie Hole or Marquis. I’d also love to take them to city park and the Botanic Gardens! We’d also for sure spend some time in RiNo and on South Broadway.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mom. She has always supported my musical endeavors ever since I was a kid, from buying me my first guitar to letting me and my high school band practice in the garage every Saturday to driving me two+ hours to see the bands and artists that inspired me as a kid. She also introduced me to so much pivotal music as a kid. My friends also deserve recognition for always being there and always being supportive. I’d be so lonely without them!
