We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Kinzo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The reason I think most people start their own business is to allow themselves to do what they want to do. Personaly I have tried to start multiple businesses and over time I have refined the answer to the question, “What do I love doing so much I could do for years, and be happy with my life. When you read business books or listen to successful people, they talk a lot about having passion for whatever it is you want to turn into a business. I think this is true but it’s very easy to get stuck, and you wind up questioning yourself. Do I have passion for wood work? Do I have passion for coffee? Do I have passion for coaching, or climbing? Some days you can’t muster up passion for anything and I think that is why answering this question is harder than you think. This is why I think life should be lived more freely. What I mean by this is to live life trying new things. You know you have found something special when you are so enthusiastic about it, continuing to search seems unbearable. For me this has happened many times, I think will continue to happen throughout my life as I grow and change as a person. Right now my passion is climbing and my mission is to become one of the top climbers in the world. Coaching allows me to build my own schedule, teach people about something I love and support myself in accomplishing my childhood dream.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I want to talk about how I got to where I am now, because it is really abstract for aspiring entrepreneurs. I continuously work hard to find a way forward in my current endeavors. What helped me was having connections to my local community. When you learn about peoples lives and they learn about yours, more and more strange opportunities start to present themselves. These opportunities are like windows. From straight on it looks like nothing is there, but if you choose to take a step forward you will walk right into it. Most of the time taking the necessary steps forward is the most terrifying thing you will ever do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First I want to give a shout out to my Mom. I have heard a lot of people say, “My mom is so great” and they have no idea how great someone can actually be. She has supported me through every endeavor, and taught me what hard work looks like. I could never repay her for everything she has done for me, but I am going to try my best for her. Second, I want to shout out Springs Climbing Center. I basically grew up in this climbing gym and I believe a lot of my success is because of the friendships and family I have gained through it. There is a reason people come to SCC and get hooked on climbing, and I think it has a lot to do with the atmosphere that has been created by the owners of the gym. I hope I have contributed to this amazing space and I can’t wait to see what the new generation of climbers will make of it.
