We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Halchak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dave, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think it depends on how you measure success but I think the most important factor is to never stop and continue to stay motivated with delivering the music I want to deliver to people. I think in music people measure “making it” or “being successful” in different ways, for some it’s making a lot of money, for others it’s impacting people’s lives or getting to live off of doing the thing they love the most, and still for others it’s just getting their music/idea out of their head and into a recorded format.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m currently playing in 3 different projects including: Giant Walking Robots, Wake Up and Live – A Bob Marley Tribute as well as solo live looping shows as Dave Halchak. I’m very excited about Giant Walking Robots at the moment as we have a bunch of new music that we’ve slowly been releasing. I’ve been writing a lot for the project and look forward to recording more music asap. I’m also really excited that the world is slowly creeping back to a level where live music is becoming a thing again. I didn’t realize how much of an impact playing and seeing live music had on me until it was taken away last March. Getting to a place where I can live off of playing music and working in the music industry has always been a dream of mine since I can remember. It’s a very difficult industry to make a living in but it’s also very rewarding. I feel one of the things that sets my music and musical projects apart is the musical diversity you can experience at a live show or in a recording. With both Giant Walking Robots and Wake Up and Live we mix improv based elements with traditional reggae elements and it makes for a lot of exciting moments on stage.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Activities would depend on the time of year but if it was this week and assuming we weren’t having so many covid restrictions, the plan would be: Hang in Denver to do some bike riding around the city, go to some outdoor dining spots to get some food and drinks followed by a trip over to see some live music probably at Cervantes (because Denver ALWAYS has a great show I want to see on any given night of the week). During the day in Denver we’d go to the Nature & Science museum followed by a stroll & chill through city park. After those few days we’d head up to Winter Park to do some snowboarding and hanging in the mountains. On the way back to the front range we’d go hang in Boulder, take a hike and get some food, then I’d drop them at the light rail station and send them back to where they came from. I’m not going to give away all the good food and drink spots because then they’ll be overcrowded, if you wanna know you just need to come hang out with me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my parents for always encouraging me to pursue what I really want in life. Without their encouragement I’d probably still be living in a place I don’t necessarily love and probably not playing music. I also want to shoutout Railroad Earth for taking me on tour as their merch person so many years ago. By them doing that, whether they realized it or not, I got my first look at the inner workings of a professional, working band and gained an understanding of how this business works.
