We had the good fortune of connecting with David Hochoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Trinidad, West Indies. My childhood was full of color, music and rhythm, and I was especially influenced by the Trinidad’s fantastic Carnival.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the Artistic Director of Dance Kaleidoscope, a post that I have held for the past 32 years. I started dancing at the age of 20 when I was in Graduate School. I had a lot of challenges to overcome, but I was determined and worked very hard to become a professional dancer. My “big break” came when I was accepted into the Martha Graham Dance Company. That completely changed my life and set me on a course that I am still on today. I was extremely fortunate to be one of the last generation of dancers to work with Martha. She taught me a great deal, lessons which I am passing on to younger generations of dancers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Mass Avenue, The Garage, Newfields

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Dance Kaleidoscope dancers, past and present, our Board of Directors, patrons, supporters and fans, and all of the contributing artists, designers, technicians whose work collectively has added up to Dance Kaleidoscope’s ongoing success.
