We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Escarcega and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dawn, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Just Between Friends is a nationally franchised company that serves families in the local area. Kids are expensive! That’s why we created these local sales where families can SAVE MONEY and MAKE MONEY on kids’ clothes, toys, shoes, and equipment—in one safe, clean, organized place—saving you time and money for other things you need. Everyone deserves to feel good about providing well for their families. We help local families afford the brands and styles they want for their kids—all while saving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a mom to 2 girls, age 15 and 17. They have grown up with Just Between Friends Denver. Just Between Friends has helped our family save money by purchasing items second hand. I purchased the sale in July 2016 and love what I do. Hearing stories of how families are able to pay for extra activities, vacation or just have extra money to help support them.

Our consignment sales are seasonal sales where communities come together to buy and sell the best in gently-used children’s, maternity, and other items, yet they are really so much more. As part of our mission and the efforts of our participants to perform GOOD WORKS—part of the Between Friends® Giving Program—each sale gives back to local family-supporting charities. In Denver, we support Catholic Charities, Caring Hands Pregnancy Center and Joyful Journeys Community Enrichment. Sellers can chooses to donate items at the end of the sale. We give them to these local charities who help those who need it.

In the entire system, we have been able to give back over $28 Million in cash and in-kind donations across the country since Between Friends began. In Denver, we donate $10,000-$40,000 in unsold items each sale!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I was born and raised in Denver and love Colorado! Places to visit would include the mountains for hiking and biking, Glenwood Springs for the hot springs, Estes Park for the wildlife and Rocky Mountain National Park. We’d head to Colorado Springs to visit Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak by way of the Cog Railroad and the US Olympic Museum.

I enjoy trying new breweries but would take tours at Coors, New Belgium and Budweiser as well as visiting places like Breckenridge Brewery, JAKs Brewing and Pikes Peak Brewing.

In Denver, we’d have to check out Coors Field, Empower Field and Ball Arena. Shopping and dining on the 16th Street Mall.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Just Between Friends was started by 2 Tulsa moms in a living room sale back in 1997. Families brought items to sell while other families shopped to purchase items they needed. Since then, the economy has brought challenges which have left some struggling to make ends meet. We hear story after story about how Just Between Friends has helped make that happen—giving families a way to provide quality items at bargain prices for their kids. And while some families sell items to have money for extras, for others, JBF can make the difference in being able to cover their bills. The families that we serve deserve a shoutout! All of these families who sell and shop with JBF are marking and saving money while helping the environment by recycling items that might end up in the landfill.
