We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deborah, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Star was a breathtaking 3-year-old palomino filly destined for a performance career or a life where she simply could realize her inner “Barbie Dream Horse” self — either way, a promising future. But on the way to her destiny, Star started exhibiting a baffling neuromuscular condition, presenting with involuntary and uncontrollable superficial muscle fasciculations, the increasing frequency and severity of which caused this once affectionate filly to become a danger to herself and to her caregivers. In an attempt to help her horse, Trove LLC co-founder Deborah Carter exhausted all veterinary diagnostic and traditional and alternative treatment options, spending untold hours and thousands of dollars with no resolution. With the veterinarians out of ideas, Deborah feared that, absent a miracle, she would have to euthanize her young horse. After much investigation revealing positive anecdotes but sorely few hard facts, and with the blessings and hopeful expectancy of Star’s treating veterinarians, Deborah decided to institute her own trial of oral CBD as an alternative and final effort to save Star. The results were nearly immediate, and Star made a dramatic turn for the better. After months of a carefully monitored CBD regimen with decreasing dosage over time, Star continues today at age 6, without any other medication, to show no visible signs of her previous neuromuscular condition. Inspired by Star’s story, Trove LLC co-founders, Deborah Carter and Samuel Carter set about to investigate, assess, and document results of CBD trials in people, horses, dogs, and cats. The results were overwhelmingly positive, nearly immediate, and supportive of widespread reports of the benefits of appropriate CBD delivery in promoting calm and addressing soreness, as well as supporting nervous/immune/GI/musculoskeletal systems. Additional benefits of CBD continue to be revealed as momentum builds, awareness grows, and formal clinical trials are sanctioned. Trove LLC is collaborating with health practitioners, veterinarians, and other individuals and organizations to help broaden the understanding and realize the promise of CBD as a desirable alternative for improved comfort and well-being.

What should our readers know about your business?
Deborah Carter began her professional career as an advertising copywriter, first for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, and later for the then largest ad agency in Philadelphia. A move to Washington, DC found Deborah rooting for the Hoyas and earning her law degree from Georgetown University while helping to build a consulting firm where she managed the Superfund sampling and analysis program for the US Environmental Protection Agency. Leaving the Clean Water Act for the clean water of Colorado, Deborah moved west to pursue the practice of law. An accomplished artist and designer, and an avid animal lover, Deborah competes in the equestrian sport of dressage and fosters rescue dogs, to date helping over 50 dogs and puppies find their forever homes. Her years of service on the board of a major charitable foundation contributed to significant awareness and advances in animal health research. All of these diverse talents and passions – from her creative streak to her knowledge of the law to her love of animals – have serendipitously taken her out of retirement to create Trove with her son, Sam.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite places begin at home in Evergreen, CO. If a friend were visiting from out of town for the weekend, I would take them for a walk around Evergreen Lake or on a hike in Elk Meadow. Then we would head to Bergen Park for a little shopping at Nellybelle General Store. After that we could walk right upstairs for some lunch at the Evergreen Bread Lounge. The next day we might venture into Denver to visit my son in the Highlands or my daughter in Cherry Creek. For dinner, there is no more wonderful setting than some of the restaurants in Union Station. Mercantile Dining & Provisions and Stoic & Genuine are my two favorites.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my family. Trove CBD is a family business that I co-founded with my son, Sam. My daughters, Avery and Madison are involved in creative decisions and promoting the brand. And my husband, Mark, a retired PhD Chemist has poked out of retirement here and there to lend his expertise. Without them Trove would not be possible.
