We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Bush and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denise, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Since childhood I have always had a strong interest in art. My mother always had us doing creative projects. I took art classes throughout high school and attended Moore College of Art, in Philadelphia for 4 years, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration & Graphic Design. After graduation I worked as an illustrator and graphic designer for publishers, marketing departments and ad agencies, as well as employing freelance work.

I was always taking pictures but it was in college that I studied photography and first worked in the black & white darkroom. Later I took additional photography classes and continued to work in the darkroom, declaring photography as my fine art medium. I began entering my framed photographs in exhibits around 2000. In 2003 I transitioned to digital photography and the digital darkroom. Since I was already well-acquainted with Adobe Photoshop through graphic design, the transition was not difficult.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My fine art photography focuses on the classic beauty of the San Juan Mountains, as well as some of its history. I am happiest when I’m out in the landscape with my camera, looking for that next scene that speaks to me. Living in Ridgway I have access to some of the most beautiful mountain scenery and I go out often. I like to go out when the light is at its best … early for sunrise, or later in the day for that beautiful golden light and sunset.

I also love the history of the area and can’t resist the old mining and other historic structures in the area. Their weathered existence tells stories about lives that once were, often leaving much to the imagination.

I sell my photography in local galleries and shops, through my online store, to publishers and as an exclusive contributor for Getty Images. I offer one-on-one photography training, consultations and judging services as well.

Everything I offer can be found on my main website at www.denisebushphoto.com. There are links to my galleries by year, my online store, and my photo blog. I have been sharing current work and my thoughts about photography on my blog since 2009. I like to organize my photos in small collections based on a theme.

It is easy to be dedicated to my craft because it is my passion! I will say it has taken a lot of persistence over the years.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I never come to the city! I am a mountain mama!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This question is a little over-whelming to me because there are so many people that have had an influence on my dedication to a career in art and my present photography business. My first art teachers, college instructors, many photo workshop instructors, the businesses that sell my work and the kind people who buy my work. I thank them all!
