We had the good fortune of connecting with Destiny Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Destiny, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking is an essential part of life! The idea that we can fully plan out our lives and expect everything to fall into place, in that order is false and can be disappointing. It was taking a risk that lead me to the small business world and that resulted in Dizzy Cakes. Every time I have a best seller or participate in seller’s markets it is risk that helped me make those decisions. To choose entrepreneurship each year is a risk and it has bettered myself and my family. I love the quote by Warren Buffett- “The best investment you can make is in yourself” and with that investment comes risks. You can’t lose when you choose yourself!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There were plenty of lessons I’ve had to learn in order to stay in business and be profitable. Realizing my worth as an artist in the dessert world continues to be a lesson. As I gain experience and unfortunately as inflation continues, I have to charge for my materials and my time wisely. As much as I would like to be affordable, I can’t afford my services if I don’t charge what materials are worth these days and my time and experience. I’ve worked so hard to learn about my profession and continue to put time and money into my business in order to grow and provide more services for my clients. There’s a fine line between an expensive hobby and a business and that line is how much you charge. Anyone who puts in the time and effort to start and maintain a business deserves their worth.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Yay! It’s girls day! First, we’ll stop at Mimosas for brunch in Five Points. The decor, food and mimosa flight is so worth the hype! After, we’ll go to the Denver Market to check out the RiNo art scene. They have some of the best murals and shops to check out! For dinner we’ll go to Tupelo Honey at Union Station and end our night a cool speak easy in North Denver.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people I am grateful to for supporting me and Dizzy Cakes. The biggest thank you goes to my partner in crime, my significant other, Maverick. He was the first person to believe in me, push me, and support our household while I figured out this journey. All the late nights and store runs and amount of dishes done to make my life easier he did without a question. I owe a huge chunk of my business knowledge to him and I’m lucky enough to have it anytime I need. I’m also so thankful for all of the small business owners I’ve met along the way! These people are true gems and some of the best artists/makers/creators/bakers I’ve ever met! They are transforming Denver with their talents and services and they deserve all the success in the world. The support for each other is unmatched! I love our community!
