We had the good fortune of connecting with Destiny Muhammad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Destiny, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I think one thing about my industry, music, that outsiders are probably unaware is how much we work at making the performance look effortless. The hours of personal practice and then practice and rehearsal with other musicians in preparation for a a performance.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art discipline music is really an expression/ a collection of sonic stories from living/ engaging with ANCESTORS and earth beings. I came to being a musician much later than my contemporaries (age 30) with an ability to sing however ZERO ability to play Harp. I had to silence the voices within that were telling why i couldn’t be come a Harpist ie., Black Female, living in projects/ child of divorced parents/ didn’t go to music school/ could read music -the litany of inner criticism. I also needed to remove myself from people who also couldn’t support my Harp Dream because they had abandoned their own dreams- and were tryna rain on mine. The Journey has not been easy, however, it has been worth it. How have I overcome the challenges:
1.. Started writing my Vision of Success on PAPER WITH PENCIL. and DAILY commit to reading it and working on something that would get me closer to my vision.
2. UNAPOLOGETICALLY GRATEFUL for EVERYTHING I have been through and Every bit of PROGRESS I make at my Craft.
3 PRAY and WORK at My Craft DAILY/ Commitment to Practicing Music Foundations minimum of 30 min DAILY.
4 Learning from my peers of ALL AGES/ ALL PEOPLES
5 ONLY have people in my circle that make me BOSS UP w/ LOVE
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
